My mother said "when you go to visit a cemetry you take a bunch of flowers. BUT when you go to the one in ASHHURST you TAKE BUCKETS AND BUCKETS OF FLOWERS. talofa

With genealogy, do you just follow one line down, eg Father and mother, then son and follow that line or do you read the whole family and take notes of all Mother Father sons and daughters down to the present day?

hi talofa,

of course it is best to have ALL the descendants that you can as someone down the line will want to know their connection.

For example, my sister's, husband's, siblings, parents and their siblings etc are in no way related to me (or my sister for that matter) but I have researched them and put them on our tree because naturally my nieces & nephews (children of that sister) want to know that side of their ancestors and where they came from and all their distant relations etc etc

This applies to ALL my siblings whose children and grandchildren may one day wonder and also applies to my children's inlaws and their families!! as my grandchildren want to know the other side of their family too ...

and so it goes on and on :)

so take notes, get yourself a good software programme to build a tree (there are free, or cheap sites available) so that you can add all your notes and photos as you find them otherwise you can get lost in a mountain of paper

Thank you for that ngairedith. I was asking because for eg John Montgomerie m Jean King 30 Dec 1788 in Kilbirnie Scotland. Their first three children were sons. Peter, William and Robert. Now Peter and William were both deported for passing forged notes (3) to the value of 5,000 pounds and were found guilty and deported, William to Van Diemans Land and Pter to Sydney, both for 14 years. The third son is Robert and we come down this line. Someone gave me every name done the line but I highlighted down through Robert to me. However I have seen where William King Montgomerie got married and lived in Tasmania and owned 5 hotels from time to time. When I asked about the relationship between William Montgomerie and William King Montgomerie I was told they were the same. He was given his mothers Surname KING He died about 1860. I really appreciate all the information you have given me, and it is being stored away to put on the family tree. Now I need to find out the conditions of the times they lived in and why they came to NZ with children as young as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,. They must have been hardy people to stand the trip and then start a new life here.

there are no hard and fast rules
you do it how you want. I think highlighting the names down is a good idea
