Whats the link? BASKIN and GORDON Ireland

Journal by piglet

Im currently researching a Irish link that became one of New Zealands pioneer families in Taranaki.
The name BASKIN. A great name to research as the number of BASKINs on any genealogical site is always very small in number, and usually related in some way.
But, Ive been side tracked.
Im now following a totally unrelated family the GORDONs to try and establish what link they had with my BASKINs.
Just briefly, cause I know all the detail and dates can get tedious when they are not your family.
The two eldest BASKIN girls, Margaret (Maggie) and Martha (Mattie) were fostered out to the Rev David Gordon following their mothers death in 1896 and their fathers second marriage in 1897.
Rev David Gordon was well into his sixties when he took on the guardianship of these two young girls.
This same Rev officiated in the girls mother and fathers wedding. Martha BASKIN had Gordon as a second name.
The Rev David Gordon retired from the ministry in 1911 and died in 1915 aged 80+
Rev David Gordon had at least 3 children that I can establish. There was also a farming property at Tauroa south of Taihape run by his sons.
The Rev Gordon and his family arrived in New Zealand in 1885.
According to ministry records he was born 17/04/1835 in County Antrium, possibly Strabane.

What was the link between the BASKINs and the GORDONs?
Did a BASKIN daughter marry a GORDON?
Were they associates,or just friends in Ireland?
Why would you give your daughter the name Gordon if there wasnt some sort of link between the two families?
I cant let this go until I establish the link.
