Where is My Maternal Line Hiding

My father's line is very long, back to 1776 in Wales where Gills were traditionally coal miners. My bio father had black hair and blue eyes. Apparently my maternal grandmother was a rogue and runaway. She was born in Kentucky, white father, Indian mother. I know his name was Wilson Thompson. My mother's father, Robert Muir, is also missing from our tree.
