Thanks, not the family I am researching

He joined the AIF in South Australia under a bodgie name. As Robert Charles WILLIAMS in August 1914 and it wasn't till 1 July 1918 when he became very ill that they shipped him back and found out his real name. He was discharged medically unfit. He never gave his father's name. He had his mother as next of kin with the name of S E Williams of East Brunswick anyway you've probably seen his papers and the Stat. Decs. Well maybe the first name was the real name and for some reason they both changed it. I'm not sure of the story.

I see what happened now Steve, he joined as Williams and must not have told his mother anyway in December 1915 he was in the hospital in London very ill and he must have told the ward sister the truth because she writes to his mother under the true name of Wells. Then the mother of course contacts the army with "what's happening to my boy" and the cat's out of the bag. It's all in archives.
