hi there, welcome to FTC
(apparently) Edward Raleigh/Smalle was the illegitimate son Sir Walter Raleigh and Elizabeth Throckmorton.
Sir Walter Raleigh & ElizabethI had an affair in which a child, Edward, was the result. The queen could not acknowledge this child. Sir Walter supposedly had a shipmate named Smalley in Devon who agreed to raise the child. It is rumored that the Queen and Sir Walter visited the child on several occasions. Many people denied the story but others felt that Sir Walter Raleigh was the father. Since he was quite the ladies man, it seemed likely it could have happened but looking at the time of the birth the queen would have been too old to have a child. Another source says the basic story is true except that the mother of Edward was Throckmorton, a Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Elizabeth, not the Queen herself. The attendants required her permission to marry which the Queen was unlikely to grant since Walter was one of her favorite gentlemen.

according to this site ... Edward Sutton Smalley (1589-1665) was given up for adoption to a servant of Sir Walter Raleigh with the last name of Small/Smalley or Smale. Supposedly, since the parents (Walter Raleigh & Elizabeth Throckmorton) were technically no longer married, Edward was illegitimate and not allowed to be raised in the Queen's court.
He died same day as his wife, 10 Feb 1665 in England

nggairedith, I read the journal on this site, and I still have no physical evidence showing one way or another whether Sir Walter was or was not Edward Smalley's father. I've read other bio's on Sir Raleigh and have not read anywhere that he was his father. Is there any trail at all showing that he was Edwards father?

Sir Walter also had an illegitimate daughter by a local woman called Alice Goold in 1578.

The trail for physical evidence of these and very probably other illegitimate children by this womanizer (and pederast) after 440 years is getting colder by the day :) but I truly hope you find out, it would be of interest
