I have traced one line of my wife's family back to this man. Having served for 20 years in the British Army in India, William and his wife Harriet (nee Woodman) emigrated to Western Australia in 1851 as a Pensioner Guard aboard a ship called Mermaid. I have his ancestors all logged correctly. However, I can find no trace of William's birth, parents or death. He appears to have just appeared and then later disappeared off the face of the Earth!
