I'm after information on my great great grandfather William Wood 1833-1900 who migrated to Australia from Jedburgh Scotland, and settled in Port Pirie. He became the 2nd Lord Mayor of this pioneer township. He also was a JP and was heavily involved in politics. He later moved to Perth and started up business Wood Coomb and Co as timber merchants in Fremantle. His son John continued the business after William died.
Not much is known about the business he had in Perth. There is a building in Perth with the name "Wood" written on a corner building. I'm just wondering if this has any significance to my ancestor.
Anyone know anything, I would love to hear from you.

this is the Coombe side of that business which may help jog others memories ...
Thomas Coombe and his wife Sarah (née Beddome) was of Cornish descent. He was a timber and iron merchant who served as mayor of Broken Hill in 1890, having previously lived in Port Pirie. He moved to Western Australia in 1895, following the gold rushes, where he set up as a supplier of building materials and subsequently served as mayor of the South Perth Municipality 1906 to 1907.

One of their sons was Sir Thomas Melrose Coombe (1873-1959) an Australian cricketer, businessman and philanthropist, best known for his role in the film industry of Western Australia.

in an ad from The West Australian, Sat 13 Nov 1897 it says ...
GALVANISED IRON
Cheaper Than Ever
COOMBE, WOOD and Co., Lord Street

there are 2,943 articles from WA newspapers regarding Messrs Coombe, Wood and Co from 1895, that you can 'browse' through via Trove ;)

Obituary of Mr William Wood from the Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail, Sat 28 July 1900

There is more about the following if you go to this article from the Port Pirie RSL Newsletter
... The Dead Man’s Penny is a Commemorative Medallion which was presented to the next of kin of the men and women who dies during World War One. A Dead Man’s Penny was brought into the Port Pirie RSL
It has been located among some old newspapers that were being cleaned up at the home of Mrs.Phyllis Schebella. Those who found it had no known connection to the
person named on the penny. (it was thought that perhaps it had been among things bought at an auction over the years.) The finders were happy to leave the penny with the RSL Military Museum volunteers and if a family could be found for the penny to be returned to them.
A check of the National Archives revealed Private Robert William Wood was born in Port Pirie to William Wood and Edith Maud Wood, (their only son) Robert was 20 years and 6 months old when he enlisted in 1916 and was a carpenter by trade.
Robert served in France and was wounded in action not once or twice but three times. Unfortunately the third time Robert died of wounds received in action. (on the 24th of October, 1918) Robert was buried at the Brookwood Cemetery, Brookwood, England.

Thankyou so much for responding guys!! Much appreciated!
The person you are referring to is the son of William Wood. He was William Oliver-Wood who was born in 1865 in Yankalilla. I'm the direct descendant to James Oliver-Wood who was William Oliver-Wood's brother.
There were quite a few Williams down the lineage at that time and even William's father back in Scotland was also a William. William's father William snr had married Agnes Oliver and she died at a very young age of 41. He later married Isabella Stewart and had a girl Penelope.
All the same, the information you have given me I can add to the siblings lineage.

the above Obituary of William Wood is definitely that of your great, great, grandfather, William Wood (1833-1900), Port Pirie, Mayor, politics etc.
It says he only spent a couple of years in Perth with Mr Coombe but all the articles at Trove should hold a wealth of info and will no doubt mention William (when you have a spare week or so to read through them) ;)
