JOHN NEWMAN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

Journal by marjhow

I'm researching Isabella Newman Bousfield who married William James Snodgrass. Isabella's parents were Henry Bousfield an Assistant Surgeon at Calcutta born Fleet Street London in 1802, married Isabella Barr Newman in 1828. Isabella Barr Newman born 1804 and was the daughter of John Newman of Finmere House Bucks, and previously of Bedgrove near Aylesbury and Dorothea. I've had no success in finding a marriage for John Newman to Dorothea and don't know her surname. John died in 1820 Banbury and "his widow" died in 1827 Clapham Rise. Their children were born at Finmere Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire from 1780 to c1811, they were Susannah, Sarah Maria, Catherine Emma married Christopher D'Oyly Aplin Finmere, Elizabeth, Mary and John, Ann Ellen (unsubstantiated) and substantiated, Dorset Beech John,Charlotte, Dorothea Henrietta married John Hearne Esq of Port-au-Prince, Charles Reyner married Julia Rebecca Hodges, Kent,Caroline, Emma, George, William, Isabella Barr*, John. John Newman was obviously a Gentleman, he was a JP for twenty years and a DL which I think may be "Deputy Lieutenant".

If anyone has any further information regarding this family I would very much appreciate hearing from you.

Dorathea Newman's maiden name was Cosens. I'm told she was the daughter of the vicar of Teddington, Middlesex which would probably have been St Mary's parish. John Newman (widower) and Dorathea were married in Teddington on 20 December, 1788. If anyone could help with information on Rev Cosens from Teddington it would be very much appreciated.

Regarding the NEWMAN famly at Buckinghamshire, you might do well to peruse this site.

The ROADS Family of Buckinghamshire, and 'One-Place-Studies' of Waddesdon, Grendon Underwood and Wotton Underwood

Type in NEWMAN in the surname field and you will see about 150 names, there's one born St.Mary's, Aylesbury, Bucks.

I have ROADS/MERRY ancestors at this abovementioned site.

Hello,

This is my first comment here, so I hope I?m doing it right. I found this after searching for Christopher D?Oyly Aplin, an ancestor of mine. Using some of the information here I found out some information online about a Rev Dr John Cosens, who was a vicar of Teddington.
Dr. Hales was succeeded by John Cosens, D. D. author of a poem, called the Economy of Beauty, in a series of Fables addressed to the Ladies; the Tears of Twickenham, &c. He died in 1791. Since his death, two volumes of his sermons have been published. (From: 'Teddington', The Environs of London: volume 3: County of Middlesex (1795), pp. 503-516. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=45449 Date accessed: 31 March 2009. )

He also wrote an ode to Princess Charlotte (daughter of George III) who, according to a listing for an auction of a painting of him, he tutored.

Henry Bousfield & Isabella Barr Newman were the parents of Isabella Newman Bousfield. Henry was the brother to my William Cheek Bousfield. One of william's sons (Octavius Lawes Woodthorpe Bousfield) came out to NZ in 1850's. Henry would have been Octavius's uncle.
Isabella becomes a 1st cousin 4x removed.

Since my last posts I've found quite a lot more information on this family. I have been unable to find a death for Henry Bousfield however. Isabella Newman Bousfield married William Snodgrass and they emigrated to New Zealand and their children came to Australia. Isabella returned to Scotland with her daughter and son-in-law who was a medical doctor. She died in Scotland. My grandchildren are descendants. I am happy to share if you are interested in the Snodgrass line.

Dear Marj,

At ancestry.com, there is a record of the marriage of Dorothea Cosens and John Newman on 20 Dec 1788 at St. Mary's, Teddington (London, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1932 for Dorothea Cosens, Richmond upon Thames St Mary, Teddington 1773-1874)

There is a portrait miniature (attributed to Mary Ann Hale) of Dorothea Henrietta Cosens (who married John Newman), and a portrait miniature (attributed to William C. Hudson) of their daughter Dorothea Henrietta Newman (who married John Hearne, Esq.) as well as very informative comments on the backs of the portraits.
