Charles was born 31 March 1872 and joined the Duke of Cambridge Lodge 7 September 1897 aged 25 years, his occupation a groom. In March 1900 he married Alice Beatrice Layne

Alice was a daughter of William LAYNE (1828-1918) & Maryanna/Mary Ann SENISCAL (1838-1919) who came to New Zealand on board the "Louisa" in 1864

- Mary Ann married James WALLACE in 1884

1868 - ? Ann Layne
- possibly married Daniel FRY in 1892

1870 - ? Fanny Layne
- Fanny married Martin WHELAN in 1895

- Emily married Samuel John ATKINS (1869-1938) in 1906

1873 - 1939 William Seniscal Layne
- William married Sarah PIERCY (1870-1950) in 1899

1875 - 1959 John Layne
- John married Maria SIMPSON in 1898

1878 - Alice Beatrice Layne
- married Charles CLARK (as per this journal)

1880 - 1960 Ella Bernice Sensical Layne
- Ella married Daniel HICKEY in 1909
- they are buried in the Old Cemetery, Thames

1884 - 1955 James Norward Layne
- James married Laura Jane LASKEY (1883-1958) in 1913
