BAWDEN: Henry goes to Moonta, Australia

Henry Bawden, fifth child of Stephen and Elizabeth GILBERT/JELBERT BAWDEN, was b/ch 1 Apr 1821 in Redruth, Cornwall, UK.

He married Josepha / Josephine MATTHEWS in Catslock, Cornwall on 22 May 1852. Henry is a carpenter in Moonta, a necessary occupation for the mining communities and machinery. They had 5 children: three in Moonta, 1 in Walleroo, and another in Victoria Town in South Australia.

Both Henry and Josepha died in the Moonta area. No info about children or death info.

BAWDEN: Marian Jane, 2nd child AR and Mabelle BUFORD BAWDEN, radio announcer, art buyer for J. Walter Thompson Ad Agcy, marries, has 2 dtrs in Chicago

Marian Jane was born 12 Jan 1920 in Davenport, Scott, Iowa. She attended Davenport schools, graduated from Rockford College in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois where she majored in English and business. She was a member of Alpha Theta National Honor Music Sorority.

During WWI she was a radio announcer for WOC in Davenport, one of the first women to hold that sort of position in Iowa. For several years, Marian worked for BAWDEN Bros. Inc, the family business, selling advertising. She moved to Chicago, Cook, Illinois to work for J. Walter THOMPSON Advertising Agency as an art buyer.

On 31 May 1946, Marian married Robert Eugene CRIHFIELD, Jr. in Chicago's 4th Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue.

Robert CRIHFIELD, Jr. was born 1 May 1920 in Normal, McLean, Illinois to Robert Eugene and Edna STEWART CRIHFIELD of Atlanta, Logan, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois in Normal and Beloit College where he majored in political science. WWII interrupted and he enlisted 21 July 1942 in the Army at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. He was a Sergeant in the 707th Army-Air Force Band until he was discharged in 1946.

He was an advertising executive working for Leo BURNETT Advertising Agency in Chicago and later was in charge of advertising for Liebel-Florsheim Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. They are buried in Atlanta, Illinois with his family. They had 2 dtrs: Ann ELDRIDGE born 23 Sept 1952 and Lynn NOBLE born 14 Apr 1955 both in Chicago.

BAWDEN: Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie", oldest of Stephen Douglas and Mary Ella WOODWARD, m. Solomon Leander ELY

Mary Elizabeth BAWDEN was born 31 Mar 1870 in Davenport, Scott, Iowa, the only dtr of Stephen Douglas and Mary Ella "Ella" WOODWARD BAWDEN. She attended Davenport school and trained in the Teachers Training School in Davenport, noted as one of the best, and started at old Number One Elementary School in Davenport [now at the corner of Locust and Eastern - Madison Elementary School, was located on Spring St. close to the Mississippi River. Original bell sits on property.]

She married Solomon [went by S.L., newspaper, census and cemetery marker] Leander ELY on 22 Mar 1900 in her family home on 1315 E. 11th St. - still stands.

Solomon (prov. Eleanor and Wylie RUMMEL Apr 2008) was born 2 Dec 1864 in Chambersburg, Franklin, Pennsylvania. In 1874, when he was 9 years old (what dates? attrib to author-compiler Alice Richardson Sloane, C.G.), his family moved to Mt. Carroll, Carroll, Illinois. Solomon was the son of Thomas Leander and Elizabeth B. WILAND ELY. He attended the Iowa State Normal School in Cedar Falls, Iowa (now University of Northern Iowa, a public university), and graduated form Davenport Business College. He worked as a bookkeeper in Davenport for the Iowa Soldier's Orphans' Home (now Annie Wittenmyer Complex - buildings owned by Family Services - a social service for profit entity, not orphan's home), and later for A. J. Smith and Son Furniture Store, and rose to Cashier at Union Savings Bank in Davenport.

Sam/Solomon suffered from tuberculosis and had spent several winter months in the South, where he contracted typhoid malaria. He died at age 39 on 6 Jun 1904, in the BAWDEN home on E. 11th, just 2 months after the death of their first son, Edward WEILAND/WILAND ELY. Following Sam's death, Mary Elizabeth gave birth to a second son, Stephen Lee/Lea ELY born 2 Jan 1905 in Davenport.

She did not remarry but devoted herself to care for Stephen, her mother, and teaching school. She died 15 August 1946 in her childhood home at 1315 E. 11th St. and is buried with her family in Davenport's Oakdale Cemetery. The ELYs were members of St. John's Methodist Church.

They had 2 children in Davenport:
1. Edward WEILAND / WILAND born 16 July 1903 and died 21 March 1904 of spinal meningitis. Weiland/Wiland was Samuel/Solomon's mother's maiden name.
2. Stephen Lea/Lee born 2 Jan 1905, died 7 May 1947 in Madison, Dane, Wisconsin of cancer. He was cremated and buried in Madison suburb Monona's Rose Lawn Memorial Cemetery. (seperate blog).

BAWDEN: Mary TERRILL the daughter, marries John Lowry ILES, son of Civil War doctor

MARY TERRILL BAWDEN; born 9 May 1851 in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Stephen and Mary TERRILL BAWDEN.

She moved to Rockingham Township (Davenport) with her parents when she was 9 yo. She attended Davenport schools. She married John Lowery ILES on 7 February 1871 in Davenport, Scott County, IA. In the 1880 federal census, they share their home with 18 yo servant Sophia RUNGE, born in Holstein, Germany of Holstein, German parents. John was born 15 September 1848 in Midway, KY to Thomas Jefferson and Maria Louisa NUCKOLS ILES.

Dr. Thomas Jefferson ILES moved to Davenport to be near his sons during the Civil War. He decided being a doctor would put him near the action and was assigned to the Rock Island Arsenal. He was born 17 March 1811 in Jessamine, KY. and died 27 November 1889 in Davenport. He is buried in Oakdale with Maria.

The 1880 census says 32 yo John is a painter. John was treasurer and manager until 1908 of Riverside Milling Co. at 804 E. Front St (now River Drive ? a Wonder Bread factory closed for bankruptcy in 2005). Then he became president of Valley Place Investment Co. He lived in the family home at 614 E. 13th St. (still exists) until 1917 when he moved to Magnolia Springs, Baldwin County, Alabama, where he died 17 December 1939.

Mary cared for her mother after her father?s death. Mary 43 yo died on 6 February 1894. She and John are buried in Oakdale Memorial Gardens. They were members of the Methodist Church. John and Mary TERRILL ILES had 3 children all in Davenport:
a. Mary Louise ILES b 25 November 1871 (Mamie in 1880 census.)(seperate blog)
b. Alice GANSERT ILES b. 28 March 1876, died 21 February 1881 of diptheria. Buried in Oakdale in the Gansert plot
c. John Thomas ILES b. 9 June 1882. He worked as a clerk for his father at the Riverside Milling Company until 1906 when he listed his occupation as a student. In 1918, John was living with sister Mary ILES GANSERT in Rock Island, Rock Island County, IL again listing his occupation as student. He married 1907ish Edna Ophelia MANGUN born 24 March 1882 in Memphis Junction, Kentucky. She died 1 February 1949 of diabetes and hypertensive myocarditis. They lived at 2728 S. 4th in Louisville. (her father David MANGUN and mother Rufina nln)
John died 25 February 1951 in the Old Mason's Home in Veachland, Shelby, Kentucky fo cirrhosis of the liver and enlarged heart. Death records said he moved there 9 mos before from Louisville. Occupation listed as mechanic. In his WWI draft record, it lists his father, John Lowery/Lowry ILES, as next of kin, not Edna, probably because his father was a widower and could use any pension/survivor benefits.

BAWDEN: Matilda's transparencies - comes to Rockingham Twp, Scott, Iowa, gets married and dies

Matilda (nmn) BAWDEN, youngest child and dtr of STEPHEN (nmn) and ELIZABETH GILBERT/JELBERT, was b/ch in Redruth, Cornwall, UK on 19 July 1830.

It's not known when she sailed, but 1860 Iowa federal census says she was part of brother Stephen's household in Rockingham Township, Scott County, Iowa.

She married GEORGE KNOTWELL (no date, no bio)probably in Davenport, Scott, IA. Based on historical naming, they had a daughter, only listed in Davenport's Oakdale Memorial Gardens, aka Oakdale Cemetery, as M.B. Knotwell, female, 5 yo, who died of 'brain fever' (cholera). Baby KNOTWELL is buried with uncle Stephen and wife Mary TERRILL BAWDEN in Oakdale.

Matilda Knotwell is mentioned in her father's will (1861 in Redruth) as being in North America.

No burial info as of 12-2011.

BAWDEN: Ralph Eldridge, son of A.R. and 2nd wife "Tess" HART, lawyer Captain in Judge Advocate General's Office in NJ, marries, has 4 children

Ralph ELDRIDGE BAWDEN was born 13 Aug 1946 in Davenport, Scott, Iowa.

After graduation from Assumption High School in Davenport, he attended Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from University of Illinois Law School in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois: he fulfilled his ROTC obligation by serving in the Army as a Captain.

He married Kathleen BROGAN, 30 Oct 1971 in Bellwood, Cook, Illinois. She was born 12 Apr 1949 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois dtr of Michael Francis and Margaret Mary YERBICH BROGAN.

Kathleen graduated from Nazareth Academy in LaGrange, Illinois. For two years, she attended Loyola University and graduated from Mundelein College with a BA in Music History and English Literature.

Ralph and Kathleen lived in Farmersville, Montgomery, Illinois where Ralph was a member of FUCHS, DODD, FUCHS, and BAWDEN law firm. They attended a Catholic church. They had 4 children:

They moved to Davenport in 2009 and lived in his family home. Kathy died 31 December 2010 in Davenport. She is buried in Davenport's Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

BAWDEN: Robert Albert, 3rd child A.R. and Mabelle BUFORD BAWDEN, secy Rotary Intnl, Sgt in Army, played Rhapsody in Blue

Robert was born 2 Jan 1927 in Davenport, Scott, Iowa the 3rd child of Albert Ralph and Mabelle BUFORD BAWDEN. Marian Jane BAWDEN CHRIFIELD and Virginia Jane, an infant, born 6 Aug 1915 and died 6 Aug 1920 in Davenport preceded Robert. A half-brother Ralph succeeds him.

Robert graduated from Davenport [Central] High School and attended St. Ambrose College [University] in Davenport before serving as a Sergeant in the Army after WWII in Germany. Following his discharge, he returned to St. Ambrose to complete his freshman year. In the Fall of 1947, he he enrolled in the University of Iowa (Iowa City, Johnson Cnty) where he graduated in 1950 from the College of Commerce with a Bachelor of Science degree and major in advertising.

He married Sarah Jean GIBSON on 31 Mar 1951 in Rock Island, Illinois Trinity Episcopal Church. Sarah was the dtr of James WATSON and Mary Mabel BECHTEL GIBSON born 27 May 1926 in Marshalltown, Marshall, Iowa. Her father
was born in Glasgow, Scotland 22 Sept 1881 and died 10 Nov 1962 in Marshalltown. Sarah graduated form Marshalltown High School and the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. Bob and Sarah were members of the University of Iowa marching band: she played the clarinet and Bob played the cornet. Bob played Rhapsody in Blue for part of his senior year graduation requirement.

In 1950, Bob joined Bawden Bros., Inc. the family advertising and printing agency in Davenport where he was an account executive. In 1972, he became Executive Secretar of the Rotary International Club of Davenport as its first full-time secretary. Sarah began to write for the Davenport Daily Times newspaper in 1947 [Quad-City Times] and was Entertainment Editor and Religion Editor. She was a member of the Iowa Press Women and the National Federation of Press Women. She died in Silvis, Rock Island, Illinois' Illini Hospital on 9 Dec 2003.

In 1980 Bob was selected as honorary Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International - given by the Rotary Club of Davenport in recognition of outstanding service to the community and organization. Bob died 26 Jun 2000 in Davenport. They had 4 children incl. a set of fraternal twins: James Stephen born with brother Albert Daniel on 30 Oct 1952 in Davenport, Frederick Andrew born 28 Apr 1955 and Virginia Mabel (Ginna) born 22 Apr 1958 in Davenport.

Bob and Sarah are buried in Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois.

Mary Ella "Ella" WOODWARD in Davenport on 20 May 1869 in a double ceremony in the WOODWARD home with Ella's sister Cornelia Rebecca "Cornie" and JB (John Baker) PHELPS. Stephen died 1 Aug 1917 in his 1315 E. 11th St. home in Davenport. Ella died in their home 18 July 1932. They had 4 children: Mary Elizabeth, Benjamin WOODWARD, Edward TERRILL, and Stephen PHELPS They are buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
3. Dr. Henry Lightbourne: ch 28 Dec 1845 in Cobra, Cuba, m. Bella/Bell (Isabella?) Murtha / Martha ANGEL / ANGELL on 28 Jan 1877 in the Presbyterian Church at 6th and Brady in Davenport, Scott, IA. They divorced. Henry m. Ida ELBERTS (no b/d date). They were divorced. Henry died 22 Jan 1919 in Ismay, Montana and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery. Henry and Bella had 5 children: Harry E., Dr. George Stephen, James Albert, Clark J, and Mae Ella.
4. William: ch 2 Feb 1849 in England (no location, poss. Redruth), d. 10 Apr 1851 in Norristown, Montgomery, Pennsylvania
5. Mary TERRILL: b 9 May 1851 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, moved to Rockingham when she was 9 yo. m. John LOWERY/LOWRY ILES in Davenport 7 Feb 1871. Mary died 6 Feb 1894, John died 17 Dec 1939 in Magnolia Springs, Alabama. They had 3 children: Mary Louise, Alice Gansert, John Thomas all in Davenport.
6. Thomas John b 10 Feb 1853 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, came to Rockingham when he was 4 yo. m. Anna "Annie" BENTON in Davenport, dtr of Richard and Margaret PENNYPACKER HIGH, b. 26 Mar 1858. Thos platted that part of town known in plat books as Bawden's Addn and he named 3 streets after his daughters (no sons). Ada Street no longer exists - now Johnson Ave., Elsie Avenue, Minnie Avenue. Thos died 14 Jan 1914 in the family home he built at 3215 Rockingham Rd. Anna died there 29 Nov 1933.
7. George Washington: this writer's lineage b. 9 May 1859 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. m. Jennie Eldridge, dtr of Jacob Mullen and Mary HIGH WILLIAMS on 14 Mar 1885 in Davenport in the ELDRIDGE home. They had 3 sons: Albert Ralph, George Ray and Harry ELDRIDGE. George Washington Bawden died in Excelsior Spgs, Missouri of diabetes on 23 Mar 1905 and is buried in Oakdale with Jennie on her father's lot. Jennie died1 Apr 1959 in Davenport in her daughter-in-law's home.
8. Albert L. b 18 July 1861 in Rockingham, Scott, IA; d 10 Aug 1861 and is buried with his parents in Oakdale.

BAWDEN: Stephen Douglas, oldest of Stephen and Mary TERRILL, local banker, double marriage ceremony with Mary's sister, Cornelia Rebecca TERRILL and JB [John BAKER] PHELPS in WOODWARD Rockingham home

Stephen PHELPS born 5 May 1877 in Davenport was named for his uncle.

He graduated form the University of Iowa Law School in Iowa City in 1894, and entered the law office of Julius LISCHER and George BAWDEN in Davenport. He joined the firm of DAVIDSON and LANE to take charge of their abstract and loan department. He served Scott County as an Assistant County Attorney, was nominated by the Republican party for County Attorney and was elected alderman of the 6th ward. He also managed the Valley Place Investment Company which was organized to sell lots in BAWDEN's Addition in west Davenport [still exists in Davenport Plat Books as BAWDEN's Addition].

Stephen married Edna Cameron HASKIN(S) 7 Sept 1905 in Trinity Cathedral, Davenport. She was the dtr of Charles and Alice Martha ROBESON HASKINS. Mr. HASKINS operated a livery stable on W. 4th St. in Davenport. The couple had no children and lived with the family at 1315 E. 11th St.

Stephen was an extremely outgoing and popular man and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity at U of I, the Commercial and Outing Clubs, and worked for many Davenport charities. He was a member of Trinity Cathedral, serving as Vestryman and Clerk and was also Treasurer for the Iowa Diocese of the Episcopal Church.

His sudden death of a stroke in the family home 13 Dec 1914 at age 37 shocked Davenport; flags were flown at half-mast, the mayor issued a special tribute and the newspapers carried a lengthy article which stated "Stephen BAWDEN had more friends than any man in Davenport, his popularity extending to all classes."

For several years after her husband's death, Edna HASKINS BAWDEN lived with Stephen's uncle's widow Jennie ELDRIDGE BAWDEN, wife of George Washington BAWDEN.

On 1 Oct 1919, Edna married James D. MASON in his parent's Des Moines, Polk, Iowa home. James was the son of James and Mary SAMPLE MASON of Davenport and a grand nephew of Jennie's mother, Mary HIGH WILLIAMS ELDRIDGE
