John CALLOW b. ca 1599/1600, died 1680 Ticehurst Sussex England

Hello,

I'm looking for the birthplace, birth year, baptism date, father's name, and/or parents' marriage date and place for The Reverend John CALLOW/E, B.A., a member of the Church of England clergy from 1621/22 until his death in 1680. He is my 10xGt Grandfather.

The Alumni Cantabrigiensis provides no background details prior to his joining St. John's College, Cambridge. John had to work his way through University to qualify, earning his keep while he studied. He had no other sponsorship or financial support. This strongly suggests he did not come from a well-to-do family or one with useful financial or church connections.

John married at Hellingly, Sussex, in 1623. At that time he was qualified, presumably as a Deacon, and was working as the schoolmaster at Hellingly. He was ordained as a priest at Chichester, Sussex, in 1624.

A son, Thomas, was born/baptised in Hellingly in March 1623-24.

The family moved south to Westham by early 1625/26, where another five, perhaps six, babies were born.

His wife, Elizabeth nee LEIGH or LEASE, died in 1639, probably co-inciding with the birth of the last baby. John's mother Alce [Alice ?] died in 1636. Both women were buried at Westham.

The parishes in which John served, to my knowledge, were, in order, Hellingly, Westham, Sidlesham and Ticehurst, all of which are in Sussex. John died in Ticehurst in 1680.

If he commenced his studies as an adult rather than an 18 year old, John may have been born earlier than 1599/1600.

John did not apparently leave a Will. If he did, it is not recorded in the PCC Wills index and there is no mention of it in A2A in relation to Sussex, East or West.

I would also like to know if he was buried at Ticehurst, or if his body was taken to Westham for burial with his wife, mother and at least two infant children.

The final fact I'm interested in knowing is if there is a memorial to him in the church or churchyard of Ticehurst or Westham, and if so, if anyone could please send me a good clear photograph of it?

As an aside, John's grandson Roger, the son of John CALLOW, and both of Roger's sons, John and William, also qualified as members of the Clergy at Cambridge University, but Roger's sons both died in their late-teens to mid-20s before they were assigned to a parish. Roger served at Mountfield, Sussex; possibly in Stowting, Kent; Beckley, Sussex, and Warbleton, Sussex. He died in the latter parish in 1732 and was buried there in the church with his late wife.

Hoping someone can help me fill the gaps on this very interesting line of enquiry,

Thanks,
