Dyers of Iowa

My Dyer line begins in Cherokee,Iowa, with William H. Dyer family. He was my maternal great-grandfather. He is found for the first time in Hamilton County,Iowa where he married Mary C Stahl and they welcomed their first son, Emmett Ellsworth Dyer. The citation can be found in the 1870 Federal Census, available at ancestry. com. The 1880 Census finds him in Cherokee with all his family, also the 1900 census shows him there. But in 1901 he died and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee with other members of his family. His obit, which I have, says he was born in Niles,Michigan, but he can't be found in any of their resources, including census records.

It has been impossible to sort out William's antecedents, because of errors in the various Federal Censuses. He has been given 3 different birthplaces, Michigan,Ohio, and Indiana. 4 different birth dates are declared: 1839, 1840, 1841 or 1842. So what to do, since he is found in none of the places where he was supposedly born.

He is found at the right age in the 1850 census for Kentucky, and since the censuses all say his father was born in Kentucky, I have chosen that father for him. I am not real comfortable with it, because if it is true, then apparently William H. is the only member of this family who migrated from Kentucky.

William H Dyer is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery,Cherokee,Iowa, with his wife Mary C,infant daughter Suffone, his son Emmett and Emmett's wife and their 3 daughters who died as little children. I have seen the graves years ago. Recently I have found from the data base, that a Louis E Dyer is also buried there,no headstone. I have no idea who he is and can't find him in any other database. But he probably wouldn't have been buried there unless somehow related.

If anyone has any info on this situation, I can be contacted at amwesty@q.com. Thanks for listening,
