The Millard family is credited with founding Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. The Timothy Millard family, remembered in Millard Avenue, arrived in York County from Pennsylvania in 1805 with the millstones from their former business safely stowed in a Conestoga wagon. They settled near Stouffville, Ontario and seven years later moved to Newmarket, procuring 200 acres from Timothy Rogers. The farm extended through the heart of present day Newmarket from Yonge Street to the 2nd concession(Cotter Street, the Specialty Flats and Charles Street).

Timothy Millard was employed as a miller at Peter Robinson's grist mill and his son Mordecai built a grist mill on the orth side of Mill (Queen) Street, and all the flats from Mill Street to Timothy Street were for 25 years his mill pond. According to tradition, settlers from the Scotch Settlement west of Bradford bypassed Robinson's Red Mill at Holland Landing and brought their grist to the Millard Mill. These former Selkirk settlers harboured no love for the elite which was to be called the Family Compact.
