What mode of transportation was used for folks immigrating from Nova Scotia to Boston in the early 1800's?

I have not been able to locate my family by ship, was wondering if their were other means. Thanks in advance for your help

Hector MacLean or McLean b. abt. 1857 Cape Breton

This is my Great Grandfather I have found his marriage 1885 to Elizabeth Mcphee (PEI). I also have his death records in Boston. He names his parents as Daniel McLean and Mother as Mary McNeil on his marriage license. I have found lots of Hectors but none with those parents names. He married Elizabeth McPhee from Prince Edward Island I have her info but am really hoping to find his birth, thank you in advance for your help. I am looking to make a trip to Cape Breton in July and would really like to find his homestead. Thank you in advance for any help.
