I am trying to find out the names of my Great Grandfather's parents. His name is William (possible middle name Edward)Elmore.

William was born on May 16th. The year varies from 1845 - 1853. He died on May 12, 1938 in Athens, AL. We believe he was born in Fayetteville, TN. He married Hannah Elizabeth Fagan on August 13, 1876 in Lincoln County, TN. Hannah was born February 10, 1849 in Forsythe, GA. She died on April 12, 1916 in Limestone County, AL. Her parents are Adam Fagan and Marchel Barnett.

William's father was supposed to have died in the Civil War and his mother was supposed to have given him to one of his grandmothers for her to raise him. He could have been very young because one story is that he never knew either of his parents. There is also a story that has his mother remarrying and having more children. We do not know of any siblings for William.

William was a great story teller and he loved to tell ghost stories. He told of living in a circus, he told of his mother (or grandmother) being preserved after her death and entombed in a glass case in full Indian dress as she was supposed to be Native American. The glass case was said to have been seen inside a cave in either Tennessee, Alabama or Kentucky by several family members.

William Elmore died at the home of his son, Ernest Dolfus Elmore. His daughter-in-law, Lois Lucille Harwell Elmore, stated he was 85 years old when he died so he would have been born in 1853.

1900 Census states that William and Hannah had eleven children with only nine living.

The information for the death certificate of William Elmore was given by Mary Elizabeth Belcher Elmore, known as Lizzie, his daughter-in-law. Some information such as his birthdate doesn't seem to be correct since I have never seen his birthdate listed as 6/25/1867 and as far as we know he was born in Tennessee.

William Elmore's occupation was a farmer and he hauled lumber. His lived in Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. He was Irish, had red hair and one leg shorter than the other and he was blind at the time of his death. His middle name could be Edward. His mother gave him to his Grandmother to raise. He never knew his mother or father or he may have visited his mother after he got older. His father was killed in the Civil War. His mother was said to have gotten married again and had 3 sons.

All of William's sons owned land on Lucas Ferry Road but lost everything to a store owner named Sam Bowings or Boyad.

Three of his sons, Jasper, Erskin and Ernest, married three Harwell sisters Lois Lucille, Ruby Jewel and Eve Earl.

James Lauty moved to Beaver County, Oklahoma.
