Julius Emil Magnusson - Palmerston North

was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium
He had served in WWI as Second Lieutenant 14026, 5th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, G Company, New Zealand Rifle Brigade

Oscar's father died in Palmerston North
* Palmerston North has lost another of its band of pioneer settlers, in the death of Mr Julius Emil Magnusson of David Street, at the age of 90 years.
Born in Sweden (7 July 1845), deceased migrated to Australia as a young man. After residing there six or seven years, he married and embarked for New Zealand, landing in Palmerston North when it was standing bush. He went farming at Fitzherbert and later at Stoney Creek. Subsequently he entered into the carrying business in the town and was a well-known figure on the rank. He is survived by his widow and three daughters, Mesdames E. Sutherland (Wanganui), A. Biggs (Putaruru) and Miss V. Magnusson (Palmerston North). A daughter predeceased him 22 years ago and his only son, Lieutenant Oscar Magnusson, was killed in the Great War.
Mr Magnusson died on the same day of the year as his son was killed. Mr Magnusson was also a road contractor when he lived at Stoney Creek

Neverman (their cousin) and F. C. Briant who were joining the 14th Reinforcements, and due to leave in the middle of March. There was dancing, cards, songs etc and continued till daybreak
- in May 1918 Herman was a sheepfarmer in Matawai, his appeal to be dismissed from the Military was dismissed but leave was recommended for 2 months
- In 1919 he was elected the Presient of the Matawai Cricketers club
- married Althea Grace Elizabeth MORTLEMAN (1903-1978) in 1931
- had 5 children
- Herman died aged 86 in Gisborne

In 1884 Julius told the Hawkes Bay Herald that he was in possession of the "iron cross", a badge which is bestowed in the German Army for distinguished valor. He said he had gone through the Franco-Prussian War and on one occasion rescued the colors from the hands of the enemy In 1886 their 5th child was born in Taranaki
In 1896 Julius acquired the freehold property of section 65, block 10 at Kaupokonui
In 1901 Augusta was chosen to unfurl the flag at Riverlea School
In 1902 they moved to Gisborne, they held an auction in July 1902 to sell some of their possessions which comprised 58 dairy cows, 5 forward cows, 1 fat cow, 8 heifers in calf, 20 12-18 month steers, 22 12-18 month herifers, 1 trap horse, milk cart horse, 1 trap, 9 milk cans, aerator and sundries, shelter trees, pigs, ducks, fowls, plough, harrows, swingle trees, and all the household furniture, beadsteads, mattresses, chest drawsers, cheffonier sofa, piano, chairs, table etc.
In 1905 at the Land Commission Sitting at Gisborne Julius stated he was a holder of 1000 acres at Rakauroa and he thought the Land Board should have greater descretionary power in regard to the residence claims. He said that at present he was living on his section at the Willows and in a year he would have to live at Rakauroa, separate from his wife who, as owner of the Willows, section would have to reside there ...
In 1906 Julius retired as a director of the Kia Ora Co-operative Dairying Company and also from dairy farming, putting his stock up for sale
In august 1910 Julius his property at the Willows to Mr C. Spragg
In Oct 1910 Julius paid ?71 an acre for 5 acres, (section 3 which fronted Ormond Rd) in Hexton (an Oct 2010 equivalent of $10,623 per acre)
In 1914 Julius sublet section 8, block 10, 969 acres in Matawai to his son Herman
In June 1918 Julius (of Hexton) annd Herman (of Matawai) put up for sale by tender, the 969 acre freehold farm, 3 miles from Matawai. It consisted of 200 acres, felled but not burnt, the rest in grass. 1500 sheep and 100 cattle. It was divided into 10 paddocks. Had a 5 roomed house and outbuildings and a woolshed. 3 stand Wolseley Shearing Machine, Cattled Yards, Sheep Yards etc. The terms were ?2500 cash ($249,772 in 2010) and the balance at 6% for 5 years with stock at valuation



Julius died on 9 April 1919 in Hexton, Gisborne aged 71
- he is buried in Taruheru Cemetery
