I would appreciate anything abt James like photos, etc? I know he was awarded the NZ War Medal which is now in the Waiouru War Museum.

Thanks.
Still to find when he came to NZ and on what ship?
He is my step fathers greatgrandfather. He donated James' medal to the Waiouru Museum and wears a mini at ANZAC day services.
Married Isabella Roper c1883, issue Leonard, Edward and Gertrude Isobel.
I believe James is buried at Heads Rd Cemetary in Wanganui.

According to the obituary below he arrived in NZ on the 'Adventure'.There was a whaling ship called Adventurer attacked by natives in 1872 in the New Hebrides, killing the mate. If he was only 52 when he died he would have been 20 in 1872.
You'd have to be searching for an arrival from 1866 to 72 when the wars ended.

Another of Wanganui's old settlers, in the person of Mr James Hindley, passed away on Saturday evening. The deceased, who was 52 years of age, was a native of Sydney, New South Wales, came to the colony over thirty years ago in the Adventure, and spent practically the whole of that time in Wanganui. The deceased took part in the fighting with the Maoris in the early days, and held the New Zealand war medal.
