Golden Anniversary of John and Frances Sturzaker (nee McDonald)

GOLDEN WEDDING.
A golden n wedding, a rara avis in
Stowport, was celebrated on'Tuesday
last, when Mr. and Mrs. John Stur-
zaker attained their fiftieth year of
connubial bliss. The Public Hall was
engaged for the occasion, when friends
and neighbors from far and near as-
sembled to congratulate the veteran
couple, who are known and respected
all along the coast. Among those pre-
sent were the Rev. J. Tryon Wilson,
Cr. Morris, Messrs. Westbrook and
Curnow (Burnie). In the aggregate
about 150 persons attended, including
many children and grandchildren of the
worthy pair. A most enjoyable night
was spent, musical items, recitations,
and dancing comprising the programme.
Supper was served shortly after mid-
night, after which a presentation of a
gold watch, chain and pendant to the
bridegroom, and a gold brooch and
pendant to tho bride, was made by
the rector on behalf of friends in Stow-
port. Congratulatory speeches were
made by Messrs. Morris, Westbrook,
M'Hugh and Carruthers, to which Mr.
Sturzaker responded in a hanpy and
humorous vein. He contrasted his wed-
ding day with the present occasion,
when no less than four wedding cakes
were provided. The festivities, were
brought to a close about 3.30 a.m.

Death of Frances Sturzaker (nee McDonald)

FATAL ACCIDENT AT BURNIE
OLD LADY THROWN OUT OF TRAP.
BURNIE, February 29.
A fatal accident occurred at Burnie
to-day, tho victim being Mrs. John
Sturzakor, of Stowport, 72 years of
age.
Mr. and Mrs. Sturzaker had driven
in a two-wheeled vehicle to Ready's
saddlery shop, in Catley-street. Mr.
Sturzaker alighted from the vehicle to
take some harness into the shop, and
handed the reins to his wife. As soon
as Mr. Sturzaker removed the harness
the horse wheeled round and made off
at a gallop down Catley-street, and at-
tempted to turn into Wilson-street. As
it did so, the wheel of the vehicle bump-
ed heavily against a telegraph pole,
the harness gave way, and Mrs. Stur-
zarker was pulled out on to the roadway
with great force.
It was seen that the old lady had
been badly hurt. Dr. Watson was sent
for, and under his directions Mrs. Stur-
zaker was taken to a private hospital,
where the doctor pronounced life ex-
tinct. The deceased was a daughter
of tho late Mr. Geo. McDonald, of
Longford, and leaves a family of five
sons and four daughters.
At the inquest to-night, a verdict of
accidental death was returned.

The funeral of the late Mrs. John
Griffen took place at Westbury on Tues-
day, and was attended by a large con-
course of people, some coming from far
along the North-West Coast to pay
the last token of respect to one so
well known and highly respected. De-
ceased, who was the only child of the
late Mr. John Dry, was born at West-
bury on September 19, 1835. The de-
ceased was granddaughter of the late
Mr. W. Elliott Leith, who about 70
years ago resided on the property at
present owned by Mr. Percy Hart, of
Launceston, and known as Leith's Farm,
Westbury. The late Mr. John Dry
having died when the deceased was an
infant, her mother later on married the
late Mr. John Sturzaker, then resid-
ing in Launceston. About the year
1853 the deceased was married in Laun-
ceston at the residence of her step-
father to the late Mr. William Gillam,
and took up her residence at Thump-
up, Westbury, on property owned by
her late husband, Mr. William Gillam,
who predeceased her some 16 years.
For a few years she remained on the
property, but on July 27, 1897, she mar-
ried Mr. John Griffen (who survives
her). She then removed on to West-
bury township, where she passed away
on Sunday morning last about 4 o'clock.
Being an old resident, she was well
known and highly respected. Deceased
had no children, but leaves a husband
and a large family connection to mourn
their loss.
