Wairarapa Standard, 8 Nov 1879 WAGLAND - At Wellington, 7th November, Philip, the eldest son of Mr P. Wagland of Greytown. The late Mr Wagland, who was a well known inhabitant of Greytown for some time, was formerly a member of the Wellington police Force, but recently became an inmate of the Mount View Asylum in consequence of brain disease. His mania frequently took the form of frequently refusing food altogether and there is little doubt that he ultimately sank from the increasing debility, caused by his long periods of abstinence. The deceased was much liked and respected. He was a member both of the A.O.F. and Orange Society, both of which orders will doubtless be well represented at his funeral to-morrow. The deceased was unmarried

Evening Post, 24 Sep 1886 WARD - On 21st September, William James Ward, aged 49 years. Home, Charleston and Nelson papers please copy
* A pitiful story of evil fortunes, suffering, semi-starvation and death, comes from Wellington. William Ward, a man with a wife and family of eight young children, lived in Cambridge Road. Ward had been out of employment and his family were suffering from want of food. Ward, in a half famished state, walked out to Island Bay, got to some distance from the hotel and then lay down on the rocks and died, leaving a written paper saying "I am worn out by anxiety and privation" Now that the man is dead, Wellington society is shocked and efforts are being made to help the starving children. But the hard, ugly fact remains, that a sober, decent and industrious man, with a wife and eight young children to support, may struggle vainly to make a living in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand and having utterly failed, may lie down and die of starvation without a single hand being held out to his aid

Of Note The Laurelbank went missing after sailing from Shanghai for Portland, Oregon .. In July 1898, the "Laurelbank" arrived at Shanghai with a cargo of case oil and iron from New York. During the passage she lost an apprentice named Charles Hendry, 16 years of age, a native of Arran, overboard. She also lost a number of sails, three boats, and sustained sundry other damages and losses about the decks. All these were made good at Shanghai to the satisfaction of the surveyor to Lloyd's agents. The ship was also put into dry dock for the purpose of being scraped and painted when the same surveyor examined her bottom and finally issued a certificate to the effect that the ship was in good order and condition and fit to carry dry and perishable cargo. Having taken in 1,150 tons of dry mud for ballast, the "Laurelbank" was ready to leave on the 29 Aug for Portland, Oregon, but owing to a gale blowing from the N.E. and to a typhoon being reported off the north end of Formosa travelling to the N.W., she did not get away till the 31st. She had a crew of 29 hands all told and was under the command of Mr. Henry K. Lindsay who held a certificate of competency as ordinary master. He had been several years in Mr. Weir's employ and had been master of this ship since she was launched. The first mate had been about four years in the same service and Mr. Weir had every confidence in him as well as in the master. On the 31 Aug the "Laurelbank" was towed to sea in charge of a pilot who left the ship at the bell buoy about 40 miles from Shanghai; he stated in his affidavit that as far as he observed there was nothing in the condition of the ship to excite remark. A ship named "Heathfield" left Shanghai the same day and kept company with the "Laurelbank" till the 5 Sep, since when the "Laurelbank" has not been heard of. When last seen she was under all six topsails, the wind increasing from the N.E. and the weather threatening. Early next morning the "Heathfield" encountered a typhoon, was thrown on her beam ends and the ballast shifting carried away or bent several stanchions in the lower hold... more here and a list of those lost

Evening Post, 10 June 1919 HONOURS OF WAR - Awarded to New Zealanders, London, 11th April . At Buckingham Palace yesterday, The following receive the Royal Red Cross (second class): Voluntary Aid Detachment members of the New Zealand Red Cross: Miss Jean Shaw Wilson, General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames.
Evening Post, 13 Aug 1935 The death occurred on Friday at the residence of her brother, 12 Talavera Terrace (Kelburn), of Miss Jean Shaw Wilson, elder daughter of the late Mr James Wilson and Mrs Wilson. The late Miss Wilson was noted for her generous and genial disposition, and was happiest when working among young people. She was always ready to help the sick and the needy and it can be said that she spent her life in service for others. For her services during the war she was awarded the Royal Red Cross. Miss Wilson lived a full life and in addition to her war work she has in turn been matron of a Y.M.C.A. hostel in England, matron of a T.B. hospital in Honolulu, nurse in a maternity hospital in Canada, matron for some years of the Teachers' Training College in Wellington and for some years was on the staff of the Y.W.C.A. She is survived by a sister, Mrs G. E. Yule (Mary Dick Wilson), Featherston and a brother, Mr A. M. Wilson, of Wellington. The funeral on Sunday was largely attended and among the many beautiful wreaths were one from the Returned Soldiers' Association and one from the New Zealand Overseas Women's War Workers. The Rev. J. R. Blanchard conducted short services at the residence and also at the Sydney Street (Bolton Street) Cemetery.

NZ Times, 14 May 1875 An inquest before the coroner, on the body of a young man named F. Wilton, who was found dead in a paddock at an early hour of the morning, was held at the Morgue yesterday at 2pm. Mr Glover, actor, having been sworn, stated that he had known the deceased for seven years. Saw him last alive at about 7pm on Wednesday in his (Mr Glover's) house in Abel Smith street, where he was staying. He then seemed suffering from the effects of drink. When he left the house the deceased was preparing potatoes for supper. He did not obtain any drink there, but had two or three glasses of quinine. He believed the deceased to be thirty-two years of age. He was formerly an actor; he has of late years been a barman. When he returned home from the theatre he asked the nurse girl where Frank (deceased) was. She told him he was asleep in the paddock. He went out and found him lying on his face with his hands underneath him. He was dead, quite cold and stiff ... more

Evening Post, 9 April 1885 An old identity, in the person of William Windmill, the well-known express owner and driver, died yesterday and the customary notice appears elsewhere with the invitation to friends to follow his remains to the grace on Saturday. Windmill was a wholesale butcher in London in his young days and left Home for Australia in the time of the breaking out of the gold diggings in 1851. He was not very successful on the Australian goldfields, where his daughter was married, and in 1856 he came to New Zealand, residing in Otago for some time and them coming on to Wellington. For the last ten years he has driven his own express in our streets and he was well known as a civil, obliging man. He has lately been working very hard enlarging his little cottage in Holland-street, and his wife, who survives him, assigns this as the cause of his contracting his last illness. The deceased was 74 years of age

Evening Post, 30 April 1878 WOLEDGE - On the 30th April, at Wellington, Charles, second son of the late Henry Woledge, Esq., barrister-at-law, of Brighton, Sussex, aged 38 years.
SUDDEN DEATH We regret to chronicle the death of Mr Charles Woledge, who expired very suddenly last evening at the Panama Hotel, where he was lodging. Mr Woledge had been in ill health for some years past and latterly had fallen into a rapid decline, it being deemed impossible that he could linger many weeks longer. last evening he was seated in an arm chair, conversing with some friends, who noticed that he seemed weaker than usual. Suddenly he asked them to turn up the gas higher, as it was getting dark, although the gas was burning at its full brilliance. He then seemed to fall asleep. A little later one of his friends went up to him to see if he were warm enough and found that he had passed away peacefully in his sleep. Mr Woledge formerly was in the London and County Bank, Brighton, Sussex and failing health compelling him to leave England, he came out to New Zealand about four years ago in the ship Langstone and on his arrival obtained an appointment in the Treasury, which he retained until he became too weak to go to the office. He was a man of most genial disposition and varied acquirements, also an accomplished musician, indeed, as a violoncellist, probably unequalled in the colony and his loss will be much felt in the Wellington musical world. He was long an active and valued member of the Choral Society and latterly of the Classical Chamber Music Club, taking part in the instrumental meetings of the latter until weakness compelled him to discontinue. His funeral will take place on Friday

She had been ailing for the last six years and was a most patient sufferer. She was much esteemed for her kindly disposition and leaves a husband and many friends to mourn her loss
"ยข[/b] WOOULDOM, Henry 9 Aug 1891 aged 88
Evening Post, 10 Aug 1891 The somewhat sudden death of an elderly man, early yesterday morning, a resident of Holland-street (Te Aro), named Henry William Woouldom, 88 years of age, formed the subject of enquiry at the Morgue this morning by Mr H. W. Robinson, District Coroner, and a jury of six, of which Mr Benj. Clayton was selected foreman. Dr H. Pollen deposed that he made a post mortem examination of the deceased yesterday, but could find nothing which pointed directly to the cause of death; but from the condition of the heart, he was of opinion that death had been coming on very gradually. Dr Pollen expressed the opinion that death was due to functional changes consequent upon old age. Joseph Johnson gave evidence that he resided next door to the deceased, who enjoyed good health up to last Saturday, on which day he complained of feeling unwell. Woouldom told witness on Saturday night he had taken a powder, which appeared to give him relief. Witness wished him good nigh and about 2 o'clock yesterday deceased called out that he was ill. Witness dressed and went into Woouldom's room and found he was suffering intense pain in his back. His daughter who resided opposite was called and they did what they could to relieve deceased, who, however, died about 3am yesterday. Mrs Sophia barber, daughter of the deceased, stated that her father was a very healthy man, but complained of a pain in his chest on Saturday last. She saw deceased at 10 o/clock on Saturday night and gave him some tea. She saw him no more till she was called at two o'clock yesterday morning. She then sent for Dr Martin, but that gentleman was away from home and before other medical aid could be summoned deceased was dead. The jury found a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony
