CARTERTON
James Farrell, proprietor of the livery stables and carting agency here, was found dead in his bedroom at the Marquis of Normanby hotel yesterday morning, He had been ill since Thursday, but nothing serious was suspected. Lumbago, or at the worst, slight internal inflammation, was considered the extent of his ailment, but now it is thought there must have been some heart affection as the immediate cause of death. He was under the doctor's care. The fatal result was very unexpected and has caused a good deal of regretful comment, while the other recent sudden deaths have intensified the melancholy feeling. The deceased was middle aged and single. He has no relations in the colony as far as is known. The late James Farrell, although following a comparatively humble occupation, had earned the respect and regard of all who came into contact with him. He was a true "rough diamond" if there ever was one. He was honesty itself, and "Jim" as he was popularly called, might, as we have more than once heard it said, have been trusted with a 'thousand all in gold'. By his worthy and generous characteristics, which, although they were of a plain kind, were none the less good and were based on sound principles, which were creditable to their possessor, he had earned the good opinion of not only Carterton residents but many others, With commercial travellers he as a great favourite and there is not a man on the road who will mot miss the sound if Jim's honest Irish voice when he next passes through Carterton. It was a voice too. It could be heard a mile away almost and its owner, with all his giant strength, seemed indeed the last person in the world to be so suddenly stricken down. Death calls every day exemplifying how feeble is our grasp of life, when even apparent health and the greatest vigour succumb at one fell blow.
.. Yet another sudden death has occurred here, making the frequency of our present experience of these melancholy events almost appalling. Yesterday morning Jas. Farrell was found dead on the floor of his bedroom at the Marquis of Normanby Hotel. He was seized on Thursday last with what was thought might either be lumbago or slight internal inflammation. He place himself under the doctor's care, but succumbed under the circumstances indicated. It is considered that some affection of the heart may have been the immediate cause of death. Mr Farrell was a single man, middle-aged and was proprietor of the livery stables and carting agency here. He is well known to all commercial travellers on the road and by them, as by everyone else, was held in high regard for the possession of honest and generous characteristics which entitled him to respect. The deceased was a very powerful man, with whom it would have almost seemed absurd to have associated the word death

Mr Richard Fairbrother
, who was the first Mayor of Carterton, a position which he occupied for six years, was one of the pioneer settlers in the borough. Born in 1826 in London, he enlisted in the 49th Regiment and served in India and China, but was never in an engagement, although at the front. Returning, he was stationed in Ireland, where he married and after a short time in Greece, finding his family increasing, he decided to buy out. On leaving, his commander commended him publicly for his steadiness and thrift. After a short time in the grocery business in London Mr Fairbrother came to New Zealand in 1856 in the ship “Ann Wilson.” Settling in the Wairarapa he opened a store in Greytown and worked some time on the roads. Subsequently removing to Carterton - then known as the “Three Mile Bush” -
he took up land and, when the township was laid out, established a general store to which the post-office was soon attached. Mr Fairbrother always took a deep interest in local politics. He promoted the first school in the bush by raising subscriptions, drew the memorial for naming the locality, assisted in the erection of the town hall, was captain of the volunteer corps and for thirteen years was chairman of the Town Board before the foundation of the borough. In church affairs he was for many years minister's churchwarden of St. Mark's Church. Mr Fairbrother died in May 1892 leaving his widow with six sons and three daughters, all grown up.
