I am trying to find some trace of a great-uncle and am at a loss as to where to look. I have tried everything I know of. Can you please help me. His name is Walter Flintoff. His father is Charles Flintoff and his mother is Sara Elizabeth Stephens. He was
born near Newmarket Ontario some time after 1897. He also had seven sisters and one brother.

There's not much to go on in your query. If Walter was born 1897 or later he may have fought in either of the World Wars. He could have headed to the USA or perhaps even an overseas country.
Do you know what happened to his brother and sisters? Did they remain living in Ontario?
I've just googled Walter's name and came up with a small paragraph on page 3 of THE NEWMARKET ERA AND EXPRESS, THURSDAY, AUGUST I4TH, 1945
"Mrs. Chas. Flintoff, Misses Greta and L. Flintoff and Cfn. Walter Flintoff, Newmarket, called on friends recently". Here's the link
http://www.fultonhistory.com/Process%20small/Newspapers/Newspapers%20%20Out%20of%20NY/Newmarket%20Ontario%20Canada%20Era/Newmarket%20Ontario%20Canada%20Era%201945%20Grayscale/Newmarket%20Ontario%20Canada%20Era%201945%20Grayscale%20%20(291).pdf
I'm not sure what the Cfn before Walter's name means. Maybe someone else could help with this.
I know that all of his family stayed in Ontario. his one sister was my grandmother. I have birth and marrage records on all of them but him.
Hi Sharon
I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for on Walter. From the newspaper article I found I can see he was still in Ontario in 1945. Do you know when and where he died? Is this what you are looking for?
I am looking for a birth or death record or both. I am also looking for a marrage record.
I have dicovered what cfn means. Cfn stands for craftsman-electrical and mechanical engeneering branch,Canadian Army.
Hi Sharon
I have been looking at the website fultonhistory.com. I've searched the newspapers on this site and come across several articles on the Flintoff's/ I came across one small article in the Niagara Falls Gazette dated 27/3/1939.
"Wage Case Settled
WELLAND, Ont., Mar. 27 ?Walter
Flintoff, 30, of Pelham township,
In court here t o d a y , w a s
charged with refusing to pay wages
of $25 to Hugh McPherson, of St.
Catharines. The case was withdrawn
and settlement made."
If this is the Walter Flintoff you are looking for, this indicates he was born 1908 or 1909. I'm not sure if this new bit of information will help you in your search for a record of his birth. Have you tried that Archives of Ontario? I believe they hold the birth death and marriage records for Ontario.
Also have you tried obtaining Walter's army record? A newspaper article I mentioned in a precious post referred to him as Cfn. Walter Flintoff. I've since found out Cfn is a military term meaning "craftsman". It looks like Walter may have enlisted in the Canadian Army for World War 2.
I have tried to obtain his army records and I can't.I am not able to prove he is deceesed and I am not a child or grandchild.
I'm in Australia. The rules for accessing the records here are a bit more lenient. I've had a look st the Canadian rules and to me they seem rather strict.
Here's some other info I've found. In a death notice for one of his sisters it indicates at that time he was living in Yukon. I notice there is a Corey Flintoff in Alaska. I wonder if it's possible Walter moved there and started a family?
Sorry - forgot to mention the year in my above post. The death notice was published in 1952.
Did your grandmother ever talk about her brother? Perhaps other family members know something.
I didn't know my grandmother, she died 6 years befor I was born. All of the rest of the family is gone as well and I don't know any of the children of the others. My father was the youngest of his family and he has been gone almost 20 years now. Of the 9 in the family only 2 are left, an aunt who is 92 and an uncle who is 75. Who was the death notice for?
I have the same problem with relatives passing on. Fortunately I knew 3 of my grandparents but unfortunately did not listen when they told about their families.
I've rechecked the death notice. It was for Jenette Ballantine and I've got to apologise I've misread it. The Walter in Yukon was Jenette's son. Walter her brother was mentioned in the death notice and he was still in Newmarket.
Hi Sharon
I'm still poking around looking for Walter. I've found a record of a Delbert Flintoff born 1907 in Ontario. Is Delbert part of your Flintoff family?
Jennett Ballantine was my grandmother. I don't know who Delbert was but he could be the son of one of my grandfather's brothers. I'll check into that. I don't know much about my grandfather's family, only that he was born in England and he had a bother named Christie. My grandfather's name was Charles.
He was born Charles Walter Flintoff and the birth is registered in York. according to the Ontario, Canada Birth Records
These are the children of Charles FLINTOFF 1854-1894 and Sarah Elizabeth STEPHENS 1861-1952.
Ann Elizabeth Flintoff 1881 ? 1960

Mary Adaline "Minnie" Flintoff 1885 ? 1961
Sacelia Luella Flintoff 1888 ? 1970
Albert Reginald Flintoff 1890 ? 1979
Jennet V M Flintoff 1893 ? 1952
Mabel Theresa Marjory Flintoff 1895 ? 1981

Hi Janilye
Thank you for posting that information.
Sharon can I please offer you some tips when you are researching your family.
When posting queries please include all the information you do have on that family and state what work you have already done to locate the people / person. (In hindsight I should have asked for this information upfront) By doing this it means that anyone trying to assist you is not repeating work you have already done and finding things that you already know.
When people do step in to help please use those important words "please" and "thank you" when replying to them.
enigmatic: Thankyou for all your hard work with this. I am new at all of this online research stuff and don't understand it all yet. Thankyou also for the tips, I will remember them.
Janilye: Hi, thankyou for the information. I have Found some of this but got stuck on Walter. Are you doing research on this family or were you just helping me? I'm asking because I would like to find others in the Flintoff line.I would be greatfull for any help you can give me and I would be glad to share everything I have found with you.
Thankyou again to both of you.
Welcome to familytreecircles,
No! I'm not related, just giving you a hand.
Hi Sharon, I wrote my comments before leaving for working this morning and have worried all day my comments may have been a bit harsh. I'm glad you did not take them the wrong way.
Now here is a strane coincidence I want to tell you about. Neither Janilye or I are related to you but Janilye has just posted a query on this website and I realise I am related to her.
I also welcome you to Family Circles - I hope you also bump into some cousins on here.
Thankyou for the hand and the welcome Janilye.
Hi enigmatic, no problem. Like I said I'm new at all this so I was just greatful there were people willing to give me a hand and advice. I think the two of you being related is wonderful. Hope you both get to know one another. Thanks again.
We're not related. enigmatic saw a query I made in here for another member's family, which had an attachment to her's, and assumed it was my family.
I see, oh well maybe he's related to the other member instead but he has found a new family member.
