Looking for James SIMPSON Australia

Query by asheppard

This is a real mystery.

I'm looking for information on James SIMPSON, below are the only details I have for him.

James SIMPSON buried 28 May 1915 aged 41 died Austin Hospital Kew Victoria Australia.

James is buried in the same grave as two of my husbands relatives

Grave Ref. IND B0077 Boroondara General Cemetery also known as Kew Cemetery, Kew Victoria Australia.

1. Florence NORGROVE buried 30 Nov 1901 husbands Great Great Aunt

2. Theophilus Corban NORGROVE buried 10 Aug 1901, Florence's father and husbands Great Great Grandfather.

other family members don't know who James SIMPSON is or how he is connected to the family if at all.

The Boroondara General Cemetery have no information other than what they have provided above, only to say that it would be highly unusual that a non relative would be buried in the same grave. They were unable to give me direction on how to find any further information on James SIMSPON.

I have checked the Victoria BMD and found one James Simpson but he was 88 years old.

I have tried ancestry but nothing jumps out, nothing in family search either. I have tried National archives, and Newspapers online can't see him there either, then again I could just be missing him.

Does anyone have any ideas on where to go from here, any help would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks.

A James Simpson was a leading figure in early Melbourne, on the boards of banks etc. The mysterious grave occupant, born in about 1874, might have been his son. I'll be back soon.

I've tried trove and war memorial records but have found no James Simpson born about 1874 who died in 1915 but the death notice could have been in the Age rather than in the Argus. I did find Flo's death notice (Argus 29-11-1901 page 1) but there was no mention of James Simpson. I wonder if the Simpson connection was through Theo's late wife of Birmingham. I couldn't find Theo's death notice either but I was looking only in the Argus.

Hi itellya,

Thanks very much for helping me out, I'm not certain about his birth year, as you know it is only what the informant knew at the time and I'm having real trouble finding the death certificate for him.

I have all the information on Flo and Theo Norgrove. I'm really puzzled with this James Simpson I couldn't find anything about him.

Non of Theo's other children married a Simpson that I know of unless one of his two daughters that came to Australia with him did, but I haven't found any connection there, but I could have missed it.

His daughters that came out apart from Florence were

Emily Jane b Dec 1869 last known 1914 Surrey Hills Vic age 45.

Clara b Sept 1867 last known 1909 Canterbury Vic age 42.

his youngest son Theophilus Leslie Trewhella Norgrove b Sept 1879 Birmingham didn't come to Australia and I haven't been able to track him down after 1881 Census in Aston Warwickshire can't find his death either, another mystery I'm trying to solve. (found him, dropped the Theophilus) killed in action May 1916 HMS Defence UK Navy.
