hi wyn,

a frustrating fact that names were OFTEN spelt incorrectly back in the 1800s and recorded as they thought!!
however, there are many CULLETY families, mainly from Ireland which opens new research possibilites for you I suppose

hi Wyn,
Daniel was the Poundkeeper at Akaroa. The Akaroa and Wainui Road Board received a letter from him handing in his resignation due to ill health, a few weeks before his death

Lyttelton Times, 21 Oct 1869
ENTERTAINMENT AT AKAROA - An entertainment was given in the Akaroa Town Hall on Monday evening, the 18th inst., by the amateurs of Akaroa, for the benefit of the widow and orphans(?) pf the late Daniel Brown. The programme of the evening consisted of musical selections, singing, reciting and dancing, concluding with the Farce of "Poor Pillicoddy" which was played with great spirit and elicited roars of laughter. We are pleased to hear that after payment of expenses, a creditable balance will be left for those whom the entertainment was intended to benefit and we have thus to congratulate the ladies and gentlemen who assisted, on the success attending their charitable efforts

ps .. astounds me how there are always "expenses" to be covered in charitable occasions. Surely the hall would have been supplied free, the food & beverage donated on the night by the ladies of the town, the amateurs of Akaroa would have performed free for the benefit of the widow and children ??
Anyway, added in case you don't have this Wyn
