15 Nov 1889 - FATAL ACCIDENT AT WILTSHIRE BAY, Clutha
... A boating accident occurred at Wiltshire Bay on Monday last, by which two men, John Carrick and Charles Hartland, lost their lives. Carrick's body came ashore on Tuesday and Mr Fleming held an inquest at the Native Schoolhouse on Wednesday. The following is a summary of the evidence:- Alex. Anderson, storekeeper, Romahapa, said that Monday being a holiday, he had arranged to go out for a day's fishing. John Carrick and Charles Hartland went along with him. The morning was fine and the sea calm. They left from the beach north side of Long Point - or Campbell's reef - at 6 o'clock, and went south past the Nuggets. A fresh breeze having sprung up, they left for home at 9 o'clock. There was then a long swell on, but he had frequently been out when the sea was as rough. They intended to land at the point from which they started, as it was generally the calmest. They had to pull against the wind and current. All went well till after they had rounded the point of the reef, when a short choppy sea struck the boat on the quarter and turned the boat over several times and then righted. They all got hold of her, but in a few minutes a wave washed him (Anderson) about 20yds from the boat.
He swam back to her, but Carrick and Hartland were then gone, and he never saw them after ... ... more
