Batten/Rigden
I am in the process of doing my family line and have come to a wall.
Can someone please advise me where to get information about the above families.
They are my great grand parents and the earliest record I can find is their marriage in Lambeth England.
What I am trying to find out is, their respective parentage and anything else such as siblings.
If anyone can give me a lead as to how to go about gettig this information it would be greatly appreciated

When did they get married? you might be able to trace family through census which go from 1841 to 1911 every 10 years.
James William Batten married Jane Gardener Rigden 1872
in the UK 1881 census we have a Jane & James living in St George in the East, London with their daughter Fanny. James was born c 1853in Devon he is a Labourer. Jane was born c1859 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire and Fanny was born c1878 in Nottingham. Going with this information I have James Batten born in Devon in the 1861 census living with family as follows:
James c 1831 Plymouth, Devon a Coast Guard Royal Navy
Elizabeth c1832 Plymouth, Devon
James c 1854 Plymouth
William c 1858 Dartmouth, Devon
Elizabeth c 1851 Conway, Caernarvonshire, Wales
thank you VERY much for the information. It is a great help and hopefully will point me in the right direction. So far in my research I have not got anyone above James and Jane but have come 5 generations down to my Grandchildren.
Dear Battek: I think the info from Silver vixen on a James and Jane Batten in 1881 census may be wrong and a red herring. According to the passenger list of the Loch Cree, James and jane Batten came to NZ in 1879 with their 3 daughters: Ida, Helen Gertrude and Isabel jane.......I don't think they had a daughter called Fanny and they would have left by the 1881 census and James Wm was a Surveyor by trade not a labourer. There is another James Wm Batten but he married an Emma Rebecca TODD and also emigrated to NZ in 1879 - I wonder if they were cousins as both James Wm Batten's had daughters called Ida Mary, one b 1870 and one b 1875 in England.
For some reason both James Wm Batten AND Jane Rigden Gardner are very hard to trace b4 their marriage as you have said.
Try the 1861 census for North Lane, Westgate, Kent: Jane G Rigden age 1 with her Father Stephen Rigden, Coal Merchant and mother Sarah plus siblings.
Sorry 1851 census as above.
