G'day Noggin, well we must be related. My father was Samuel Albert Jones, he married Annie Gladys Foreshew. As far as I can tell so far, Jabez married a Sarah, they had 3 daughters Rhoda,Gertrude and Sarah L and a son William E. I think Jabez's parents may have been Samuel Jones born 6th December 1811 and Sarah 1818. I think Samuels parents may have been Samuel Jones 1770 and Sarah Carter 1770. I will be in the UK next June. I have traced the Chandlers and they were all Saddlers and I think Frederick Chandler may be a decendant still involved in Saddlery in Marlborough. William Jones 1877 married Rosa Lily Chandler 1876, they were my Grandparents. I will keep in touch as I do more investigating. The Jones are a bit hard with all the Samuels and Sarahs. A copy of Jabez birth certificate may shed more light on Rhoda/Sarah, it may be a transcription error on the baptism information.

On 1851 Census shows "Sarah" was born in Hampshire, name and place of birth follow through to 1881 Census.

In 1861 Samuel & Sarah, son Samuel, Major William & Sarah Ann and Samuel's father Richard b 1777, widowed Former dairy farmer, recorded under "Janes"

In 1871 Samuel & Sarah, son Major William & daugh. Sarah Ann, children recorded without surname, also Nephew Joseph Leckman 13, and a Dom Serv. Jabexz & Sara next door.

In 1881 Samuel & Sarah, daughter Sarah Ann b1857 plus Grocers Assistant, Baker & Dom. Serv were living next door to Jabez & Sarah. Samuel's Occ: Grocer & Baker, Jabez Occ: Bacon Curer

The above site allows you to search by town. Best to just use surname when searching because it can throw up whole families.

Thank you, I will give that a try. What has thrown me a bit is that Jabez married a Sarah, his father Samuel married a Sarah, and his father Samuel married a Sarah. It is confusing, could three generations of men each marry a Sarah?

It's possible, but Jabez's father Samuel b1811 married Sarah, Samuel's fathers name was Richard b 1777 as per 1861 Census and he married Hester according to the Baptism records above that Noggin found.

G'day again, In my copy of the 1861 census, Richard Jones was born in 1837 not 1777 as per noggin, he is listed as brother to Samuel, he is listed as a widowed, dairy man. I am a bit confused at the moment so will need to sit down with all the printouts and really find out who Samuel's (1811) father was

I'm not quite sure at what printouts you are looking at but on the original handwritten Census for 1861, where the family is recorded under "Janes" and is a transcription error, it clearly shows Richard Father Widowed aged 84.

the family seemed to remain in Ramsbury living in High Street, a few doors from each other.

On 1861, Mary Wm Janes should read Major William Jones.

I still think you best bet to get the right family connection to Samuel, is to purchase Jabez's birth certificate, it will show Sarah/Rhoda's actual name and maiden name and then you could search for the marriage to Samuel and get his fathers details from the marriage certificate.

Thank you, I haven't been looking at the original census forms, just the transcripts so I think I would be better off in future looking at the originals. I will order a birth certificate for Jabez. When I visit the UK next year I want to be able to see where my ancestors lived as I have no relatives in Australia outside immediate family, and never knew my grandparents or austs and uncles etc. I am in contact with a cousin Foreshew in London. Hi: Jones family from Ramsbury: Mary Jones b. 1823 was from the same family as yours. She was my 2x great grandmother. Richard Jones 1782 - 1862 was my 4x great grandfather's brother. His parents were John Jones 1740-1780 and Frances Day 1743-?. Richard's wife was Esther (Hester) Goddard b. 1776. Her parents were Thomas Goddard 1739-1810 of Aldbourne and Elizabeth Bridgeman 1744-1777.
