PRING from Somerset or Devon

Journal by lesliepring

Finally started to make some head way searching my paternal line. Grandfather LESLIE JOHN PRING b.15-12-13 d.8-1-46, found father to be JAMES PRING and mother to be ANNIE PRING nee KITCH. Every search leads me around Devon and Somerset border areas, so concentrating on that for now.

Many thanks for the info - some of which I knew, but the information regarding James' first marriage is priceless. Working our way back down the A303 ! Still wondering about connections to the PRING family in Awliscombe !!!
Only ever met IVY LILLIAN in her dotage but not very forthcoming with information. She was married to an Ilminster man named BAKER and she died about 10 years ago. Nice lady but mad as a box of frogs !!!

The marriage certificates should give you their fathers details and you should be able to find the families in previous census.

on freebmd.org.uk site it lists Taunton, Chard & Honiton as Devon and has Taunton & Chard are also listed as Somerset.

They are not far from each other so there is a possibility of the two Pring families being related.

I also discovered a Keitch family with Ruth born 1865 Whitelacking, next suburb to Ilmister on the census, could be a possibility for Ruth's family

1871 England Census about Ruth Keitch

Martha S Keitch 1,daugh, b1870 Ilmister

The following is the 1881 Census but it doesn't make a lot of sense.

1881 England Census about William Keitch

Many thanks for that. The information does seem a bit confusing, especially with the possibility of the mis-spelling of the KITCH/ KEITCH surname. More digging to be done for sure, but initially concentrating on the PRING side for now.

Incidentally, have come across something peculiar.
In the 1901 and 1911 census James gives his age as 27 and 37, and Ruth and Annie's age as 35 and 36 respectively. This ties up with what we know, however, the marriage of James and Ruth m.19-12-1893 lists their ages as 21 and 24 !!! Don't know why, but might have had something to do with James really being 19, but that doesn't explain away why Ruth's age doesn't tie up either. The marriage certificate also lists John as James' father and his occupation as Market Gardener, but the PRING name was quite widespread over the Blackdown hills and could even drift eastwards into Dorset.

Did you get a copy of the James Pring & Annie Kitch marriage 1904 to compare the details.

Changes to ages happens all the time, makes interesting research.

This looks like a possible for James Pring's family

Didn't think of checking James and Annies marriage certificate - duh! Can you tell I'm new to this ? The ages on the census records are all over the place, which doesn't help with this research either !!!
Was having problems with the BMD and census websites yesterday as they've been updating their servers. I'll see what else pops up.
Don't suppose you want the job of family researcher - you're doing great so far!! Only kidding. You have been more than helpful and if we should ever meet up I'll owe you at least a pint. Many thanks again.
