hi Jill, What sort of info are you looking for?
Thanks for getting back to me. I have requested there marriage certificate in the hopes of finding his parents and origin. Any ideas would be grateful. Thanks.
Catherine was known as Olga Catherine. Son Percival listed her as Olga on his recruitment statement. She was born in Green Island, Otago but BDM doesn't have her listed under the spelling of Isteed. She died in 1955 aged 91, therefore a birth year of 1864 and is listed as Olga Catherine.
Just building a picture to get to John :)
With a name like that it is possible John was from Ireland. It is a very common name and there are many options. However, do you know what his occupation was as this will make it easier to track him. Do you have his year of death?
They are not buried in Dunedin but there is a possibility they could be in Lawrence. Do you have any of this info
Olga (GaGa to us) was alive when I was a child and died in Timaru and cremated in Christchurch. I was 5.
Our info shows Olga and John met in India during the war so we assumed she was born in India or uk yet to be confirmed.
Olga and John were my grandmothers (Ann Eliza Fahey) (sister to Percival) parents.
Thankyou for taking the time to look that info up. Every little bit builds the tree.
On Ann Elizas birth certificate which I have John was 28 in 1890, a Laborer and came from Victoria. I did find a grave for a John Fahey in Bluff cemetery today but not confirmed.
Olga's father, James Isteed (1821-1902), was a soldier in India when he met and married Elizabeth White (1835-1903) in 1846 in Bombay. They had 2 daughters in India, then a son in Melbourne in 1855. They arrived in Dunedin, from Melbourne, on the 'Gil Blas' in Nov 1855. Olga was about the 4th child born in Green Island and they had another 4 children, the last in Lawrence.
So, if she met John in India perhaps she was visiting the country, maybe with her father/parents.
oh thanks so much for that. awesome history. I appreciate it.
The John Fahey buried in Bluff Cemetery was 76 in 1944 (birth 1868)
yes that was how we think it may be him. unfortunately no wife in the burial notice....still looking.
Here is something to think about Jill
James Isteed & Elizabeth nee White had a son in Green Island, Otago in 1858, James Isteed - a brother to Olga Catherine Isteed.
James Isteed married Amelia Fahey in Otago in 1886. Amelia was born in 1862 in Saint Arnaud, Victoria, Australia, a daughter of Patrick Fahey from Galway & Mary 'Eliza' Sale from Dublin, who married in Victoria in 1861 before moving to Otago.
Patrick Fahey had a brother, Martin Fahey who married Eliza's sister, Emily Sale in Dublin in 1849. This couple followed their siblings to Victoria, had children there and then followed their siblings to Otago.
So, bottom line ..
John Fahey married Olga Isteed in 1885 in Otago. Olga's brother, James Isteed married an Amelia Fahey in 1886 in Otago
Patrick & Martin Fahey were early founders of the Balclutha districts
Thankyou for this response, you are amazing! I did read the wonderful website last night on the Fahey family in Balclutha and hoped we were related somehow.
Amazing how the Isteeds and Faheys are entwined. I have applied for John and Olgas marriage certificate. Cant wait for it to turn up! It will give me Johns parents.
Can I ask a personal question.... how are you connected to this site employed? or someone who just has a passion in geneology? I live in Sydney and my neice in Christchurch is colating all this for us. So time consuming and we love it.
Death notice for John Fahey is available at paperspast NZ.
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CL19050818.2.16?query=john+fahey+tapanui
He died on 9 August 1905. BDMNZ online record him as 44 years. He is buried in Tapanui.
Other articles indicate he is the eldest son of Mr & Mrs P. Fahey of Waitapeka.
Thanks Scott thats a great help. I will look that up.
I received John and Olga Catherine Sales Marriage Certficate with great excitement. Working back from his age at the time of marriage he was born in 1861 which does make him Patrick and Elizas oldest child which is not mentioned in the Fahey blog. Many thanks.
