Looking for Alice May Love (nee Cook D.O.B. 1906)

Query by crocodile

HI THERE ALL. Alice may cook was born 1906 at Armidale N.S.W. AUSTRALIA. Married either 7th or 17th January 1927 at St. Albans Church of England Five Dock Sydney N.S.W. AUSTRALIA. to a Leonard George Love born 1901. possible a male son of Alice & Leonard was born approximately 1931 possibly Sydney NSW. it is believed that Alice May Love (nee Cook) died Boggabri N.S.W. somewhere between 1934 & 1954. one bit of info i have says she died boggabri nsw 1934 but further info i have traced is that a DOROTHY SHURTE (NEE dawson) used to visit Alice and her family during the early years of the war, possibly 1940. Alice use to visit a Mark Cook at Armidale, he was much older than Alice so possibly he may have been an uncle of her fathers side. Alice's parents were GEORGE ARTHUR COOK, And Sarah Ann Giles (Sarah born Lyndhurst N.S.W.)

I don't think Alice May Love died in Boggabri between 1935 - 1954 as she and Leonard are on the Electoral Rolls in Berala & Lidcome 1930 - 1963

Alice M Love b1906 was listed on the Australian Electoral Rolls as follows

1930 26 Fouth Avenue Berala with Leonard George Love - labourer
1933 same details
1936 same details
1937 same details
1943 same details
1949 same plus John art student
1954 27 Osten Street Lidcombe Leonard George Love - Electrician plus John Leonard
1958 same details John is not with them
1963 same details John is not with them

Leonard George Love died 1965 Auburn NSW, nothing showing for Alice except there is this entry on Ancestry

The Sydney Morning Herald issue Thursday 20 February 1936

Plaintiff alleged that the accident was due to defendant's negligence. The defence was a denial of the allegation. A verdict was given for plaintiff for ?30. Mr. P. A. Dwyer (instructed by Messrs. I did a search of that Macquarie Park Cemetery from 1940 to 1980 and the one buried there (which it doesn't say on that cemetery index) is Alice Mary

Name Type Location Date
LOVE ALICE MARY Burial A J HARE LAWN - ROW 47 - 0004 20/06/1977

Couldn't find any other Alice M who died from 1963 when she was on the roll till 1980 that fits the age. The 1977 one has the wrong parents.

nsw.bd&m
DEATHS:
103912/1977 LOVE ALICE MARY WYMAN CHARLES ALICE CHARLOTTE MARY

If the Leonard and Alice in Sydney are the right ones I can't find a death for her.
I went through all the Alice LOVEs who died in nsw from 1934 to 1980 and none seem to fit as far as age or parents. The ones in Boggabri who seemed likely I have ruled out.

I came across this marriage entry very curious

9036/1905 COOK GEORGE A GILES SARAH A BATHURST
9086/1905 COOK GEORGE A GILES SARAH A BINGARA

look like there are two George & Sarah's or did they marry twice?? its bit odd.

Bingara is about 150 plus kms up from Armidale and Bathurst is about 500 plus kms down the away from Bingara.

I'm presuming that the Bingara one is your family - I wonder if the Alice May Cook who married Leonard George Love in Haberfield is actually the Alice May Cook born Armidale.

On the Marriage certificate for George & Sarah in Haberfield does it give "usual place of residence" information for either of them and the fathers names & occupations.

Another curiosity is there is a Sarah A Giles born in Armidale 1885 to Thomas H & Mary J Giles I can't find a Sarah A Giles born in Lyndhurst, there is a Sarah Giles born 1878 in Orange that's the closest.
If, as you say, Sarah A Giles was born Lyndhurst she may be the one who married George A Cook in Bathurst and the one born in Armidale married George A Cook in Bingara.

It's all a bit confusing - I would presume that Alice May born Armidale would have parents from the area - that is Sarah A Giles born Armidale and George A Cook, as yet I can't find birth for George (but see below) - also would assume that they married in the area so the Bingara marriage would fit as well,

BUT

You really need to obtain the certificates to clarify all the details- Alice May Cook Birth Certificate and both the Marriage Certificates for George & Sarah, and marriage Certificate for Alice May Cook & Leonard George Love to be sure you are tracing the correct family and the connections, hopefully they will give you more information.

As for Mark Cook - I found a Mark Cook born 2 June 1898 mother Jane father Christopher Cook/Cooke from Armidale he enlisted in the Army on 19 Jun 1918 occupation Brotherhood Student - Franciscan Order, mother living at Dumaresq Street Armidale. On 1930-1943 Electoral Rolls he is listed as Mark Dominick/Dominica Cook living in Armidale.
Information on his service can be found in the National Archives online.

It looks like Christopher & Jane had at least 13 children all born Armidale surname spelling Cook or Cooke

Infant Cook b1871 d1871 Armidale
Frederick Cooke b1872 d1955 Armidale
Christopher Cook b1874 d 1953 Armidale
Andrew Joseph Cooke b1875 d 1949 Kempsey
John Cook b1883 d1968 Wyong
Bernard F Cooke b1885
Samuel Cooke b1887 d1970 Armidale
Athol Cooke b1890
Lawrence Joseph Cooke b1893 d 1974 ?(no district listed)
>>>>>>>>>Mark Cooke b1898 d1977 ? (no district listed)

there is also these children

********George A Cook B? D1935 Armidale - Is this George Arthur who married Sarah A Giles in Armidale.
Jane Cook b? d1926 Kempsey
James b? d1950 Armidale

or again are there two Christopher & Jane Cook/e's can't locate a marriage for them.

Possible death for Christopher Cook husband of Jane - 1915 Armidale father Christopher mother Louise, again you will need to confirm George A Cook's fathers name from marriage and the above 1935 death for George to make sure of family connections.

I found the death for Alice M Cook d1934 Boggabri aged 63 years so as Janilye said, this is not your Alice b1906, could be a relative, but the certificate would be the only way to find out.

Again this leaves more questions than answers it will take some cross checking with certificate and more digging to work it all out.

Another point of research could be the Armidale Family History Group

hello asheppard, have gone through some of the certificates etch that i have on Sarah Ann Giles/George Arthur Cook.Sarah Ann Giles born 10th July 1885 Lyndhurst NSW.,George Arthur Cook born abt 1869, married Sarah Ann Giles (born 10th July 1885 Lyndhurst NSW.) AT Bingara NSW. i do have a marriage cerificate dated 27th October 1905 to confirm their marriage.. According to Ancestry.com site Phillip Knox Giles born 1904-1976 (my father) and a sister Alice M Cook born 1906 born Armidale NSW.SARAH ANN COOK (NEE GILES) divorced George Cook in about 1935 and remarried to a Frederick Boyd.It is not 100% sure that Alice May Cook (married name Love) did actually die at Boggabri NSW .
I am of belief that George Arthur Cooks parents were Christopher Cook (father) & Jane Baldwin (mother) Sarah Ann Giles parents were Thomas Henry Giles born 1849 Somerset England and Mary Jane Guyer born 1869 Maitland Nsw.died 29 February 1956 Ballina NSW.
