James's Story....so far


After the death of his mother Annie (nee DENIORD), James father, Samuel WIDDICKS for reason's I don't know allowed James and his two siblings, Rose and Maud, to be taken into care.

James was taken into care by the Board of Guardians Whitechapel and in 1901 is shown in the British census as an inmate, aged five, living at Mile End Old Town, London, England. Then on 13 Dec 1902 James was moved to Kent to live at the Farningham home for little boys, where he stayed until 7 April 1902.

The next record of James is from the passenger list's when on 20 May 1909 James was amongst a group of Barnardo's children sailing on the ship "Corsican" from Liverpool to Quebec, Canada. James arrived in Quebec on 28 May 1909 and was transferred to Toronto, Ontario. In 1910 there are records showing James in Hastings East, Ontario.

In 1911 James is a servant on a farm working 60 hours a week 52 weeks a year!!! There's another british home child at the farm called Alice POINTING, a servant of the house who worked the same hours as James. This is the last known whereabouts of James apart from his final resting place at Whites Bayside Cemetery, Hastings, Ontario. Grave ref 1185. Two other people share the grave, they are Carol Maud WIDDICKS and Annie E C WIDDICKS. (no dates known)

James' sisters, Maud and Rose, where also British Home Children. All three children travelled at different times.

If anyone can fill in the missing parts of James's life or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

She was born 1807 in Cheriton Bishop, Devon, England and died 1890 in Chudleigh Devon England, daughter of James HOWARD and Grace COOMBE.

Harriet TANCOCK was born 1831 in Cheriton Bishop, Devon, England and died 13 Aug 1926 in Gawler South, South Australia. She married William ATYEO 22 Sep 1870 in Adelaide, South Australia. He was born 1842 in Hitchaine, Somerset, England and died 09 Oct 1926 in Gawler South, South Australia, son of Joseph and Frances ATYEO.

Richard TANCOCK was born 1834 in Cheriton Bishop, Devon, England and died 09 Mar 1890 in Willaston South Australia. He married Ruth PONSFORD 05 Jan 1858 in Newton Abbot, Devon, England. She was born 16 Dec 1836 in Chudleigh, Devon, England and died 29 Mar 1877 in Kangaroo Flat, South Australia, daughter of George and Mary PONSFORD. He married Mary PARHAM nee WHITE 11 Dec 1879 in Gawler, South Australia. She was born 1828 and died 16 May 1896 in Gawler River, South Australia.

Mary Ann TANCOCK was born 1837 in Cheriton Bishop, Devon England and died 1921 in Newton Abbot Devon England. She married George DYER 06 Nov 1859 in Chudleigh Devon England. He was born 1833 in Trusham, Devon, England and died 1919 in Newton Abbott, Devon, England, son of James DYER and Mary HOLMAN.

Maria TANCOCK was born 1840 in Cheriton Bishop, Devon, England.

Susanna TANCOCK was born 25 Dec 1842 in Chudleigh, Devon, England. She married George Henry PONSFORD. He was born Mar 1842 in Devon, England, son of George and Mary PONSFORD.

John TANCOCK was born 12 Nov 1844 in Chudleigh, Devon, England and died Dec 1866 in Newton Abbot, Devon, England.

Robert TANCOCK was born 1847 in Chudleigh, Devon, England and died 22 Jul 1932. He married Sarah Ann PROUSE. She was born ABT 1848 in Ilsington, Devon, England and died 26 Jun 1938 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada.

George TANCOCK in was born Apr 1849 in Newton Abbott, Devon, England. He married Charlotte CHERITON. She was born 1838 in Crediton, Devon and died 1899 in Crediton, Devon, England, daughter of Christopher CHERITON and Mary Ann BRAGG.

Henry TANCOCK was born 31 Oct 1851 in Chudleigh, Devon, England.
