Do not know what era you are talking about but a Fortune Scott married in Chard Somerset England 1857 to Jane Marsh. The same Fortune Scott shows up in the 1851 UK Census in Seavington St Mary, Somerset, he was a Glover and he was at the home of John & Sarah Phelps, he is shown as a Relative. He is aged 15 year of birth shown as 1836. Also listed is James Scott aged 12 born Seavington St Mary shown as Grandson. In the 1841 Census he is shown with John Scott 1806 Somerset, Elizabeth 1806 Somerset, Sarah 1833, Mary 1835, Fortune 1839 and Thirza 1840. John was an Agricultural Labourer.

Hi there. You need to read the following article JOHN SCOTT (b. 1799 Seavington St Mary's, Somerset) and ELIZABETH PHELPS (b. 1808 Dowlish Wake, Somerset) family. This will clear up any problems as these are my ancestors.

Fortune was actually a female.

The Elizabeth Phelps, daughter of William Phelps and Grace Chislett, is not Fortune's mother nor are the related except that her great aunt, Ann Scott married your Elizabeth's uncle Thomas Phelps. No relationship between the two sets of Phelps found yet but they have caused confusion in researching. Your Phelps branch seems to have come from Merriott and mine from Dowlish Wake.

My apologies, I should have read the original rather than the transcript : of course Fortune is a woman why did I assume a man?

Hi, to both of you. Thanks, I know I am not diectly connected to Fortune, but I do have the Dowlish lot in my computer, and had wondered what happened to Fortune. As my maiden name was also Scott, I am interested in both lines.
So, another question please, Mary Ann Phillips (Phelps)( Hull) chr. 1861 Dowlish wake, married William Male, I have her grandfather as John, and grandmother mother Martha Hull. Please do you have anything on this lot, as I have a Martha Hull dau of Abraham, but I would think she would be too old to have a child ,William,in 1813.

Hi,ALV, You seem to know almost as much about my family as I do. Are you only connected to the Phelps, and Scotts, through Fortune?, I have found that a lot of the Somerset families in that area are intermarried, thus connected further down the line.

Not response, but, another connection. William Phelps and Grace Chislett, had daughter Mary who married James Ash. Their daughter Elizabeth married James Long.
William Long and Ann Caller had son Jacob who married Fortune Scott. William's brother Joel married Sarah, their son, James married Elizabeth Ash.

Hi cmsv

Yes I do have quite a bit of information. My grandmother was DAISY MAUD SCOTT; her parents were CHARLES VICKERY SCOTT (b. 1874 Seavington St Mary's, Somerset) and AMELIA OSBORNE; Charles's parents were WALTER SCOTT (b.1851 South Petherington, Somerset) and MARY ANN VICKERY (b.1851 Seavington St Michael, Somerset, England). Walter's parents were JOHN SCOTT (b. 10 Nov 1799 Seavington St Mary, Somerset, England) and ELIZABETH (BETSY) PHELPS (b. 1808 Dowlish Wake, Somerset, England. FORTUNE SCOTT (born (christened 8 July) 1836 Seavington) is their daughter and Walter was her brother. Yes Fortune married JACOB LONG and they migrated to Australia.

Yes there was a lot of close marriages as for about 150 years of my family up to 1880s they were all within a radius of about 20 kilometres.

JOHN SCOTT and ELIZABETH (BETSY) PHELPS were actually WALTER SCOTT's grandparents. Their daughter ANNA SCOTT had Walter out of wedlock.

Thanks for the answers. Even though I asked ages ago, its good to see others working on the same line. Just a correction on Thurza who married Giles Hodges, she was christened in 1828 and married in 1851, making her 23 not 12.
