Bush Advocate, 7 August 1905 SAUNDERS - At Dannevirke on Wednesday, August 2nd (by drowning), William, youngest son of the late Joseph Saunders, of Kaikoura, aged 35. Kaikoura paper please copy
Bush Advocate, 7 August 1905 DROWNING FATALITY Yesterday morning it was reported to the police that the body of a man had been found in the Tapuata stream a few yards below the ford at Stanley-street, and upon investigation it was identified as that of William Saunders, a rabbiter on Kaitoki station, who had been reported to be missing since Thursday last. Saunders was a single man, aged about 35 years, and for the past 18 months he had been employed between the Kaitoki and Tahoraiti stations. Shortly after breakfast on Tuesday morning he left Kaitoki and rode into town, where he stayed until Wednesday night, when at about 10 o'clock he got his horse from Messrs Hunter and Seymour's stables, and rode away to Tahoraiti. He was accompanied as far as the railway crossing by Henry Klee, head shepherd at Kaitoki, who left him there and returned to get his own horse. This was the last seen of Saunders alive, and the rest can only be surmised. As the night was very dark and wet it may be that after going a certain distance he decided to return to town and got on to the wrong road taking the Stanley-street route instead of Rawhiti-street, or it may be that instead of riding straight on he had unconsciously tutned round. At all events his horse turned up riderless at Kaitoki early on Thursday morning, and a search was immediately made. It was at first thought that he had gone to Palmerston bu inquiry there, and the discovery of the body have dissipated this idea.
... When found the body was firmly caught by a snag which fact probably prevented deceased from recovering himself after he was plunged into the water. An inquest was held at the Junction Hotel, this afternoon before Mr T. Lindsay Buick, district coroner and the following jury;- F. E. McKenzie, G. Beckett, R. J. Hunter, G. Newett, William Henderson and A. W. Collett
