WOODVILLE This Day

Mrs Oulsnam, wife of an old settler, was killed in the street this morning. While driving a young horse in a milk-cart the horse bolted and the trap struck the kerb and capsized on top of Mrs Oulsnam, who was so badly injured that she only lived twenty minutes. Deceased leaves a number of children

Manawatu Standard, 13 Dec 1900
WOODVILLE ACCIDENT

Townsfolk were horrified shortly after 10 o'clock yesterday morning to hear that Mrs Oulsnam, wife of Mr C. J. Oulsnam, Pinfold Road, had been killed in Mclean Street through the capsizing of a spring cart she was driving. The unfortunate lady was driving along the street in the direction of the station when the horse bolted and turned sharply down the street close to Mr Rhodes' house. In turning the corner the trap struck the curbing and capsized. Mrs Oulsnam, who was a heavy woman, was thrown out on her head. She was immediately carried to the Commercial Hotel, where she received every attention from Dr Milne, but expired in about twenty minutes. There was a frightful gash on the back of the head and the base of the skull was fractured.
Mr Oulsnam, who was at work at Mr Fountaine's at Kumeroa, was immediately telegraphed for. Much sympathy is felt for him and the six young children who are so suddenly deprived of a loving wife and mother. Mrs Oulsnam was one of the most kindly natured women it has been our lot to come in contact with and her loss will be deeply felt by a very large circle of friends.

Woodville Examiner, 8 Sep 1916
News was received in Woodville on Wednesday of the death that day in Wanganui, of Mr C. J. Oulsnam, for many years a resident of Woodville. The late Mr Oulsnam was a farmer in the early days and a great cross country rider. While hunting he had a bad fall which injured his leg and left him lame. Some years ago he gave up farming and took over the carrying business which he conducted until ill health forced him to give up work. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Bloor, who was killed in a trap accident about sixteen years ago. later he married Mrs Baker who survives him. He leaves a family of five daughters (three of whom are married) and one son. The funeral left the Woodville station at one to-day for the cemetery, Canon Eccles reading the service at the graveside.

NOTES 14 years after Martha's death, in Feb 1914, Mr G. D. Macfarlane put up for auction 'a five acre section, belonging to the estate of the late Mrs Oulsnam'. The following year, 15 years after Martha's death, the Public Trustee, as administrator of Martha's estate, sold her freehold property containing 4 acres 3 roods 21 perches, being Lot 3, 701. part Rural Section 13, Woodville and all land in C/T 27/211

Oulsnam is an unusual name - there are a lot of OULSNAM links, databases, trees and help at this site

"O" names - OLD GORGE Cemetery, Woodville

the 'Residents' of OLD GORGE CEMETERY, Woodville, Manawatu, New Zealand
. visiting Old Gorge cemetery . The cemetery lies 3km from Woodville township. Head west along SH3/Napier Road, towards the (now closed) Manawatu Gorge. Just a short distance past Old Gorge Road (on your left) and over a bridge, look for the Railway Crossing sign on your right. Cemetery access is over the railway line, up the narrow, winding road and there it is, nestled among beautiful old oak trees, at the bottom of the Ruahine Range. There is parking, or you can drive around the cemetery to plots. An ingenious display board lists all names, their plots and a map.
. guided tours . Friends of Old Gorge Cemetery conduct tours on the last Sunday of each month that has 5 Sundays, with fascinating, insightful stories of the life and times of these early pioneers and settlers

Sarah Ann GRANFIELD 2nd wife of 1st Mayor of Taihape, Anthony NATHAN

Who was Sarah Ann Grenfield/Granfield?
Apart from being the second wife of Anthony Charles Nathan I know nothing of her, her parents, where they were from, any siblings etc...

Anthony's first wife, Sarah Ann Harris had died in 1878 so assuming they married after that.
They had at least one child, Anthony Carroll Nathan born 1892 - (he served in WWI and his son Carroll Nathan died in WW2) - he became a barrister and solicitor and died 1966 in Wellington. He married Ngaere Bayly.

I dont even have birth or death data for Sarah Grenfield and finding anything is very difficult as sites looked at assume you are looking for Greenfield!!

ELEANOR HARRIS 1819 - 1882 ... Broomfield, England to New Zealand 1841

ELEANOR "HELEN" HARRIS was born in Broomfield, Essex, England about 1819.
She emigrated to New Zealand on the "Slains Castle" in 1841 with a Samuel Harris who was maybe her brother ..?
The following year, in Wellington, she married George Pilcher (who had arrived in 1839 on the "Bolton" from Gravesend) and they had 12 children from 1844 to 1862, all born in the Wellington District.
She and George moved up to the Hawkes Bay at some stage after that - they both died in that area, George in 1891 in Napier and Eleanor in possibly Clive, in 1882.

I would like to know her parents and whether her travelling companion Samuel Harris was indeed her brother, if so, what became of him...
