Johann Heinrich 'John Henry' BARGFREDE was born about 1833 (unknown where)
- he died on 16 January 1908 aged 74 in Timaru, New Zealand

he is buried in Timaru Cemetery

- his mother Hinriette/Henriette Bargfrede
- died 29 October 1881, Woollcombe's Gully aged 78 (born about 1803)

- his wife Sarah HARRIS
- died 13 February 1912 aged 72 (born about 1840)

Johann and Sarah owned a store at Waimataitai in South Canterbury, 3km north of Timaru

In 1865 Johann was in Woollcombe's Gully Timaru and had for sale a two-roomed cob lean-to and one acre of land, fenced and cultivated

In December 1866 they were living in Woollcombe's Gully when he found 2 stray lambs on his property

On 2 Jauary 1867 John found 2 lambs, a wether and a ewe. He said the owner could have then by paying for the advertisement

In November 1868 his wife (or his mother) Mrs Bargfrede, won 1st prize (a silver medal), for her butter

On 13 February 1869 he inserted an ad in the TIMARU HERALD:
- NOTICE -
On and after this date, all dogs found in the paddocks of Captain Cain will be destroyed - J. BARGFREDE, Timaru, February 11, 1869

On 16 April 1870 a number of the townsfolk subscribed to the Timaru Hospital. John's subscription was ?1 ($121 in April 2010)

On 28 January 1871 it was advised that as from the 1st Fenruary the price of a quart of milk would be 6d & signed:

On 15 May 1872 Henriette Bargdede advised that she had laid poison in her garden fronting Main road, Woollcombe's Gully

On 7 August 1872 the householders of Timaru (including John) wrote to the Timaru School Committee feeling aggrieved at the decision of the School Committe to enlare the present school in preference to accepting the recommendation of the Board of Education to erect a good school on a central site so as to meet all the requirements of the town. They requested a public meeting. (A public meeting was convened at the Mechanics Institute on Wednesday the 14th August at 7.30pm)

On 27 December 1872 N. FISHER, Secretary of the COURT SOUTHERN CROSS No. 3123, A.O.F., Timaru & I.O.O.F., MANCHESTER UNITY, Timaru advised that they were having an amalgamated anniversay on Wedesday January 1st 1873 in the paddock lent by brother Bargfrede for the celebrations. Members were to meet in the Forresters' Hall at 10.30am, processsion to start at 11am sharp, headed by the Timaru Brass Band to Bargfrede's paddock where there would be a variety of sports, football, quoits and a cricket match between the members of the two Lodges. Also a Pig Hunt for boys under 14. A banquet was to take place in the Foresters' Hall at 6pm with plenty of cakes, meat and fruit pies, lemonade, ginerbeer, fruit etc

On 26 February 1873 he advertised in the Timaru Herald:

On 15 May 1874 John Bargfrede of Woollcombe's Gully advertised for sale 2 young Draught Horses, a filly and a colt, rising 3 years

In June 1874 John found 2 cases and said the owner could have them by paying for the advertisement...

On 9 Novemner 1874 someone lost a Gold Cameo Brooch in John's paddock or on the road leading thereto. The finder was offered a reward

In January 1878 Johann was advertising for sale, cart tilt & lamps, nearly new

In March 1878 Johann & Mr Sherratt were selling and delivering Coal and best black pine Firewood from Church St Timaru Coal & Firewood Yard

In July 1878 he and Sherratt had a 2pm auction on their premises, selling Chaffcutter, Saw bench, Weighing Machine, Spring cart, Corn sacks etc

On 21 March 1879 a notice was put in the Timaru Herald:
- LAND TRANSFER ACT NOTICE -
Notice is hereby given that THOMAS HARRIS, of Timaru, Farmer, CHARLOTTE HARRIS, of Orari Gorge, Widow, SARAH BARGFREDE, wife of John Henry Bargfrede, of Timaru, Coal Merchant, and SUSAN THEW, wife of Robert Thew, of Orari Gorge, Farmer, claiming as Devisees under the Will of CHARLES HARRIS, late of Timaru, Farmer, have applied to be registered as proprietors of two pieces of land containing respectively 2 roods, part of Rural Section No. 707, Timaru district, as comprised in Certificates of title, vol xii., folio 162, and Vol xvii., folio 241; and that they wil be so registered unless caveat forbidding the same be lodged on or before the 14th day of April, 1879
Dated this 6th day of March, 1879, at the Lands Registry Office, Christcurch - R. W. D'OYLY, District Land Registrar

.. note, Sarah was a Harris and the land left to her was that of her brother Charles Harris (1846-1877) - Thomas Harris (1844-1927) was her brother & Charlotte Harris (1814-1905) was her mother & Susan Thew (1856-1924) her sister ..

- the above Charles Harris died on 8 Oct 1877 aged 31 and his mother Charlotte died 21 July 1905 aged 91

- Charles & Charlotte are buried together, Plot 136, Block D, (new Plot 136, new Row 17) at Timaru (next to Johann & Sarah)

On 20 February 1880 John Henry Bargfrede of Woollcombe's Gully, Timaru advertised For Sale - A ?-Acre, corner Arthur and Bank streets, No. 228, near New Post Office; ?-Acre, St Andrews, No. 46; 50 Acres, Orari, Nos. 32290 and 32780, near Tripp's Cutting, well watered; also 20 Acres, No 18836, well watered, and some bush on it

In 1884 Johann sold his half acre section (adjoining the gas works, which he owned with Mr Rhodes) for ?480 to the Timaru Woolen Factory. He took out ?150 of the price in shares in their company

In April 1887 John was on of those elected by ballot onto the Waimataitai School Committee

On 15 June 1893 there was an advert in the Timaru Herald:
WANTED - All those interested in the "Waimataitai Tracker" to meet at Bargfrede's Store, Waimataitai, on Thursday night, June 15th at 7.30pm

In February 1895 a consignment of general merchandise arrived on the 'Corinna" for him

In July 1908 Johann's estate after his death was certified for stamp duty as worth ?1971 (in July 2010 this is equivalent to $294,523)
