Dutch Records
My Grandfather was from Holland. Is it possible to find out his reason for migrating to Australia and what his ocupation was also if perhaps he had been in some kind of trouble. Thank You. Helen

Dear Helen,
The National Archives of Australia is a great starting point once you have the pertinent birth, death and marriage certificates to begin your research. Ask if anyone in your family has done 'research' into your history first to keep costs down.
At the NAA site, click on 'search now as a guest' type in first and last name and click on search. Be prepared to browse lots of pages if the surname is common like 'Wood' for example.
All the States/Territories of Australia have repositories of records of emigrant arrival, e.g. State Records of NSW online, and Queensland State Archives are just some ideas.
There may be records about your grandfather within the Trove website. Full of digitised newspapers, photographs and so much more.
You might wish to join the Dutch Society of Australia
Another fantastic resource is Rootschat register as a new user, free site, then scroll down to their 'Australia' childboard and post lookup requests. Please be very careful to provide as much information including all your sources (i.e. websites that you got info off, bdm certs nos. etc.) that you already have so as to avoid wasting precious time of the wonderful genealogists that are out there happy to help.
Best wishes.
