FIRST SETTLERS.
The first settlement made in Vernon Township was in the
extreme northern part, not far from the site of the little town of
Newry. The first settlers were Luther Beadle, who was said to
have been present at Pigeon Roost massacre; Hughes Hall, set-
tled near State Ford; Robert Jillaspy, who made the second land
entry in the township, 1820. Hiram Marling, who is one of the
oldest now living, came at an early day. John D. Neal made the
first land entry in the year 1819. The McDonalds and Ballards
came at a very early day. John Bell entered a small tract of land
in 1820, and Samuel Spaul in 1821. Moses Houghland, James
King, and the Owenses are also classed among the pioneers. Set-
tlements were made further south by George Langdon, Albert
Nelson, the Riders, Blunts and Mitchells. "

Page 330, from "History of Jackson County, Indiana", Chicago: Brant & Fuller. 1886. In part it reads, " On the 18th day of November, 1816, a special court was held, with Cyrus Douglass first associate, and John Ketchum second associate judges. Cyrus Douglass (b. February 6, 1774, New Milford, Connecticut) was a judge in
Jackson Co. August 1816 to February 1817."
Hinds Chamberlain is noted to have been a town officer in 1802. As well was mentioned Cyrus Douglass. Town of Caledonia, embracing at first all of what is now the town of Caledonia, LeRoy, Wheatland and part of York. Store and tavern licenses were given to Isaac Scott.
From a letter written in 1966 by Gladys Richards Cornwell to Brownstown chamber of commerce:
"Walter Benton was an earlly post master and Methodist preacher in Brownstown, was a close friend of Cyrus Douglas and Samuel Whedon. They all came from near Geneva, NY. I was told by my grandfather that "Cyrus Douglas and Samuel Whedon organized a company from around Geneva, NY to come into the Ohio Valley. That Cyrus Douglas was called the Path Master. It was advertised that the Indian lands were selling for $1.25 an acre..."

There were two Mary Ann Douglass in this generation, one daughter of Ebenezer Douglass and one daughter of Martin Douglass. Bacause Ebenezer moved on to Missouri, it does not seem to have mattered too much to the family - until people in much later generations began to try to straighten out the genealogies! Then the duplication made things confusing.
