James FORD was impressed by the British Army to fight the American Colonist around 1776-77 when he was about 14. He decided on that cross Atlantic trip that if he had to die in a war he would rather do it for the Americans. Impressed soldiers were normally kept on ships- rarely were allowed to land. His ship was on the Hudson River, one night he saw his chance to desert and swim to Washington's Army. The Continental Army made him a Fifer in the 6th Regiment of the New york Militia- which he did proudly. He served under Roswell Hopkins New York Dutchess County. He was stationed at Fishkill Supply Depot to keep safe from the British.

With that said: How do I go back to Ireland now? He was born in County Down. He sailed out of the Isle of Cork (Belfast)??
