Hester Hugh married Edwin Sutherland in Bath, England in 1817, raised 6 children in Bath, then emigrated to New York with her daughters in 1845 to join her husband and sons there. They are listed in the 1850 and 1860 Census for NY Ward 19, then in the San Francisco 1860 Census.

Their son Edwin Sutherland (b. 1831 in Bath) married Anna Maria Green (b. 1834 in Brooklyn NY)in San Francisco in July 1860. They had 9 living children, the first 4 born in San Francisco, the others in their new home in Sonoma, California. Emma Constance Sutherland, b.1868 in Sonoma, married Lewis Dudley Manning of Oakland about 1890; my grandfather, Louis Victor Manning, was born in Oakland in 1894. He married Doris Stine, b.1893in Orange County, California, and my mother, Evelyn Doris Manning, was born in Oakland in 1919.

Hester and William Sutherland are my maternal great great great great grandparents. William died in Sonoma before 1870, Hester died in Sonoma before 1880.
