I have positively confirmed my lineage to James J. Cox above through US Census, birth, marriage, death, and probate records. I hit a brick wall with James. From what I am seeing, Ancestry.com has combined possibly 3 different William Cox and are attempting to tie this into James. All 3 variants of William, the possible father, have different origins of birth, and none have a documented son named James. Most famous of these is William Cox of Henrico County, Virginia who willed his land to his 4 sons and widow. This individual pops up often on genealogical sites as the father of James, but there is no record, specifically his will, that shows James as a son.
