Bastin

Our Bastin surname line originated in Gloucestershire, England

Earliest records go back to Berkeley/North Nibley area in the 1600's.

Most Berkeley Bastin's headed mainly by several George Bastin's, seemed to have died young. Could be due to Smallpox epidenmics.

Our line are the only survivors I can find.
Thomas Bastin was born 1797 Berkeley, but resided mostly at a nearby town called Dursley. He married Hester Pegler in 1814.
Of that marriage Jonathon Bastin was born 1817. He moved to Cheltenham
and married Lois Simmons of Cheltenham, in 1837. His occupation was "house painter". They resided in the St Peter's area of Cheltenham. Most male children born also became painters or house decorators.
George b.1845 moved to London by 1881 & married Sarah Tippet of Cornwall.
My Great grandfather Joseph was employed on the railways and also left Gloucestershire. By 1881 he was a fireman at Normanton, Yorkshire.
He married Appalyna Nicholson in 1883. They had about 6 children.
Unfortunately Joseph died 1905 from what was thought to be a railway accident. My grandfather was born in 1903 & he was adopted by a couple called Robert & Margaret Paterson. Margaret later took Ronald up to Gateshead, after Robert died, about 1916.
Another son of Joseph, called Albert b 1888 was killed in WWI, Ypres May 5th 1915.
More loss occurred when the flu struck in 1918, taking both Ethel Maud & Frank Bastin
