David FITZGERALD and Johanna COUGHLAN of Kilbehenny Parish Co Limerick

Their mariage took place C1840/1841 and is not recorded in the Kilbehenny Parish records. The Baptismal/Marriage register between 1831/1841 was lost in the flood of 1970 but after the Latter Day Saints microfilmed the rigister. However when the microfiched records were computerised some errors crept in and their marriage is one that was apparantly missed. Note I picked up a baptism of one of their children that was missed because in 1992 I had access to the original register at Kilbehenny and was able to give the Tipperary Heritage the details as written in the original register. When they scrolled through the microfiche records there it was and its now been added to the computerised records.

If you have some knowledge of how the microfilmed records were downloaded into the computer you will understand. Remember this was done back in the 1970/1990's by largely people learning new skills. Better still try and take down details from a microfiche reader of the time and see how many mistakes you make after a half page.

The baptisms we have are as follows;
William bap. 03/02/1842 sponsors Mary COUGHLAN & Michael FITZGERALD
Michael bap. 12/09/1844 sponsors Bridget & John FITZGERALD
John bap. 07/08/1847 sponsors Margaret Kelly & Jerimah FITZGERALD
Patrick bap. 31/07/1850 sponsors Ellen Coughlan & William FITZGERALD
David bap. 04/12/1856 sponsors Margaret Coughlan & John MCGRATH
Margaret bap. 12/10/1859 sponsors Ellen MAGNER & Maurice FITZGERALD
Mary bap. 07/08/1864 Ellen COUGHLAN & xxxx MAGNER

Additional note - It would appear that married women sometimes wrote down their maiden name as sponsors as I believe that the Ellen COUGHLAN above was married to Jerimah FITZGERALD and Margaret COUGHLAN and John MCGRATH were married 11 months before David's baptism. I have turned up similar use of maiden names in the baptismal records of grandchildren of Margaret COUGHLAN & John MCGRATH (their daughter Mary married to James ODONOGHUE)
John K COUGHLAN

NB as at March 2011 we haven't traced any of the above children

the COUGHLAN's of coolnamahogue townland co. linerick, ireland

the oldest COUGHLAN we have to date is timothy COUGHLAN who died at the family farm Coolnamohoge (various spellings)on the 18th january 1867 aged 86 years (civil registration photocopy) which would have put his birth around C1781. The informant was his daughter in law Ellen COUGHLAN nee MAGUIRE (various spellings).
He married Margaret WHELAN somewhere around 1809/1811 when she would have been only 17/19 years of age and timothy about 28yo which was youngish for the socioeconomics of the time. I know her age because I had a photo of the gravestone in 1990 and I personally saw and photographed it in 1992. Margaret was 68 yo when she died in 1860.
Whether we have all their children we are unsure as Kilbehenny Parish records only start in 1824/1825.
The only baptisms we have are for william 1825, david 1827 and timothy 1831. From Kilbehenny Parish marriage records we can add Johanna C1841 married David FITZGERALD (marriage is missing from parish records),Ellen married Jerimiah FITZGERALD in 1846 and Margaret married john MCGRATH (various spellings) on 30th january 1856. From witness/godparents/sponsors names we have a mary and a james but so far no marriage or death records for them.
I'll update more on those who married from this marriage in separate journals.
