Emeny, a son of the deceased, who stated that his father had been missing since the 31st ult., at which time he was sober - in fact, he never drank. Since his disappearance witness' mother, who resided in Carterton, had caused enquiries to be made as to his whereabouts, but without avail. There was nothing, so far as the witness was aware of, that would lead to the supposition that his father had committed suicide. The deceased's life was insured for ?250 (Aug 2012 equivalent of $45,300) and his age was 56 years. The jury returned a verdict of Found Drowned

his grandchildren tell me:
" ... bringing our family fishing boat back from Napier, both granddad and boat lost. Only one gumboot was found. 'Jimmy' was Wairoa's Freemasonary member/businessman - Lawrence Motors/buses and taxi services and Mayor of Wairoa.
Lawrence Motors was sited in North Cyde near the Wairoa River.
Lawrence Park was to be sited in McLean Street, the Park named after him. His first wife was a chieftainess called Hariata my grandmother, both married in the forest of TaneMahuta, the old Maori way. The Lawrence family is related to the Gregories family from Scotland as Gregories uncle was Arthur Lawrence of Pahiatua"
...

... "he was married to A HARIATA IN THE fOREST OF TANE MAHUTA and then to my grandmother May, maiden name Lewis from Nuhaka Wairoa" ...

... granddad never spoke of his life much, there may only been a very few times he said anything. What I know abount him is he was a Wairoa Taxi driver for many years. The day of the drowning he had brought the tug boat from Napier. On the boat was my father, Rex Lawrence and a granduncle I think. It happened comming into the Wairoa Mouth. Granddad and the granduncle drowned. They have never recovered their bodies to this day. My Father Rex was about 16/17 years old at the time, is now 63. I also hear that Granddad Leslie also went by the name Jim/Jimmy. He also had many partners and children. I have been told a story that granddad had been barred from the family because he married a Maori ...

... granddad's wife, my grandmother, May Lewis Lawrence, was from Mohaka or Nuhaka, Wairoa, Hawkes Bay. They had 6 children but all in total there's about 26 children that have been spoken about and they are supposed to be of Leslie James Lawrence ...

... this is my grandmother, May LAWRENCE (nee LEWIS) parents:
Heni Ruihi SMITH (17 March 1885-14 March 1965) & William David LEWIS (2 Feb 1867-26 Feb 1955)
my grandprents Leslie James LAWRENCE & May LEWIS children:
RONALD JAMES Lawrence
REX Lawrence
JEAN Lawrence
JOSEPHINE MAY Lawrence
BRIAN PAKU Lawrence (he has not made any contact since leaving home)
- My grandmother May 2nd married to a Ben Ropitine. They had 1 son
...

- none of them mention the above Inez Bernardine SMITH although the Jane Smith is interesting (last comment)
- his next 2 wives may have been common law and I hope his descendants can provide the children of these unions
- Leslie 'James, Jimmy' Lawrence died on 14 August 1963 in a boating accident in Wairoa. He was 65 (sic ??). The 'granduncle' mentioned as drowning with Leslie was Walter Henry Coe (1881-1963), 1 of 2 sons of Thomas Lewis Coe (1855-1933) & Rachael/Rachel MARSHALL (1856-1942) who married in 1878, lived in Wellington where Thomas was a Saddler and both buried in Karori

* In March 1860, aged 22 he played in the first interprovincial cricket match ever played in the colony. In the eleven aside teams he played for Wellington, the Auckland team travelling down - a long and difficult journey in those days... Auckland won with four wickets left in a 32 overs match held near the Mount Cook Barracks...I will post a list of the Wellington players on this site at a later date as a lot of them are on this tree

* In January 1867 aged 29 he was working as a Post Office Clerk, he was also at this time the Treasurer of the Central Fire Brigade in Wellington

* On 1st November 1878 aged 39 Sub-Inspector Goodall and others found an illicit still in the bush at Mongonui Creek near Karere - which is 134km north of Wellington, near Palmerston North. The still was on Mr Walker`s land and was traced to the possession of Fritz Von Schluter and Levi Buck, who were fined 100 pounds each or twelve months imprisonment. According to an article in the Wanganui Herald, what they found was only part of the apparatus and a few days later Mr Walker was burning some fallen bush when he found the rest of the plant and handed it to Constable Gillespie at Palmerston.
In about 1880 aged 42 his 5th child Ernest was born, town unknown

* In the 1880-1881 (aged 42/43) City of Wellington Electrol Roll he was living in Molesworth Street, which is in Thorndon, a kilometre north of Wellington City. He was recorded as a clerk

Enoch died 10 November 1894 aged 52?
12 Nov 1894 It is with sincere regret that we record the death of Mr Enoch Maddock, which occurred at his residence near Eltham Road, on Saturday at midnight. Deceased was about 52 years of age (BDM has 57); he was an old and respected resident of the place and his demise will cause much concern. His death had not been unexpected latterly, he having suffered severly for some time past from the dread cancer, which had lodged at the root of the tongue. Mr Maddock was born in Nelson and accompanied his father when the latter took up the management of Starborough station some 30 or 40 years ago. Deceased became Inspector for the Wairau Awatere and Omaka Road Boards for about eight years, when he resigned to enter into some contracting engagements which occupied his attention till 1890. He then took the Inspectorship of the Awatere Road Board, and had occupied that position till his death. Deceased was well known publicly in connection with the contract which he and Mr Parker carried out on the Dashwood section of the Picton - Hutunui railway. Some ?18,000 (2012 equivalent of $3,000,000) was expended in the course of this contact, and the trouble which arose over the work, involving Messrs Parker and Maddock in heavy financial losses, is an important matter of local history. Mr Maddock worked on the Wakamarina gold diggings for about six months in 1866. He was a member of the Foresters' Society; and in all public and private capacities in which he engaged he was noted for his sterling worth of character. A wife and several children, most of whom are young, are left to mourn a loss which we are sorry to hear has occurred in not the best of circumstances. To the family we tender our hearfelt sympathy in their unfortunate bereavement. Mrs Knight, of Maxwell road and Mr Thos. Maddock, are sister and brother of deceased, The funeral took place this afternoon
... The Awatere Road Board presented his wife with a cheque for ?14 13s 3d as a token of the Board's esteem for her late husband ($2,560 in 2012)

Harriett died 30 November 1919 aged 61
31 November 1919 A one time resident of Blenheim, Mrs Harriet Maddock passed away on Tuesday morning last at the home of her daughter, Mrs Durrant, of the New Commercial Hotel, Wellington, after a long illness. The late Mrs Maddock, who was a daughter of the late Mr Andrew Henderson, was born at Okaramio in 1856, and was in her sixty-third year. Her husband, who was inspector for the Awatere Road Board, died twenty-five years ago. Mrs Maddock left Blenheim for Wellington some few years ago, and had resided there ever since.
She leaves eight children:- Richard at Otaki, James at Wellington, Percy at Levin, Mrs Lovell at Wairau Valley, Mrs Durrant at Wellington, mrs Sisson at Seddon, Mrs Inkster at Nelson and Mrs Webb at Wellington.
The funeral takes place to-morrow morning from the Church of the Nativity

- they are buried together Plot 44, Block 3 at Omaka cemetery
