... thanks to Clare Morgan and her message of 12-10-2010 .."I notice that you have stated that Nathaniel longney married twice. I believe that there were 2 Nathaniels who emigrated to New Zealand from Gloucestershire. The younger Nathaniel is yours, however his uncle, who was born in 1843 also emigrated to New Zealand. I think he is the one who married Kate as he disappears from all the British census but turns up again in 1901 (after Kate's death) and is noted as a widower, living with his brother Eli.He had travelled back to Britain in March 1901 on the Papanui. It makes sense that the elder Nathaniel married Kate because why would Kate's memorial say "beloved wife of Nathaniel longney" if they had divorced?"
