- When those 5 children were still young (aged from 2 to 14) their mother Ann McPharlane died.
Five years later Stephen emigrated with them to New Zealand on the 'COROMANDEL'
His first son, George had sailed to New Zealand 4 months previously on the "BOLTON".

He met his second wife Bennett Hook on the ship, she was a widow, travelling with her 3 children.
Stephen and Bennett had a daughter - Sarah Annis (who died aged 14) - 2 months after their arriving in New Zealand.

They married in 1842, when Stephen was 48 and she was 33 and they had 6 more children.

This made a total of 12 children for Stephen over a period of 35 years - from 1820 to 1855.

Stephen Pilcher born 1832, moved to Australia prior to 1859 (prior to age 27) because of the gold.
He married Mary Jane Rowe in February 1859 in Australia and they had 12 children in Victoria.

. visiting Old Gorge cemetery . The cemetery lies 3km from Woodville township. Head west along SH3/Napier Road, towards the (now closed) Manawatu Gorge. Just a short distance past Old Gorge Road (on your left) and over a bridge, look for the Railway Crossing sign on your right. Cemetery access is over the railway line, up the narrow, winding road and there it is, nestled among beautiful old oak trees, at the bottom of the Ruahine Range. There is parking, or you can drive around the cemetery to plots. An ingenious display board lists all names, their plots and a map.

Elizabeth Firth (1858-1940) was the daughter of Abraham Firth (1816-1898) and Sarah Thompson (1823-1865), very early settlers of Waipawa, New Zealand.

25 January `897 Benjamin P. Walker, licensee of the Railway Hotel, Johnsonville, was charge with having sold drink to William Picken after hours on Saturday, 26th December. Walker was defended by Mr Beere (I kid you not)

Born in Wellington, the third child to Enoch Walker and his 2nd wife, Jane (nee Greenhalge)

A fatal motor-car accident occurred on the Rimutaka Hill late yesterday afternoon,a single woman named Esther Mary Walker, aged 60 (sic, she was 59), a dressmaker of Woodville, being killed. The accident occurred about two miles from the summit of the hill, on the Wairarapa side. The car in which Miss Walker was travelling went over the side of tho road and fell about 200 feet. Tho driver of tho car, Mr Thomas Henry Walker, of Hawera, a bacon factory proprietor, brother of deceased, escaped practically unhurt, but two other ladies who were in the car, Mr Walker s daughter-in-law and wife, are suffering from shock, and are at present in a private hospital at Featherston.

IN BANKRUPTCY - In the matter of a Deed of Assignment, dated the 27th day of November, 1878, and filed in this Honorable Court on the said 27th day of November, 1878 and made between ENOCH WALKER of Wellington, bootmaker, of the first part; LIPMAN LEVY, of the same place, Merchant, of the second part; and all the creditors of the said Enoch Walker of the third part

Enoch was still in Wellington in 1879, as above and was in Woodville by 1882, as below:

There is a Mary Ann Redpath buried in Plot 12 of the Old Gorge Cemetery, Woodville, on 25 Jan 1909. She was aged 63 at the time of death which gives her a birth date of 1846 - a 'settlers' age.
Rangiwahia is about 80km north of Woodville.
