'Dinah', Farrier 1470, left for the South Africa War from Kihikihi having been a member of the local Waikato Mounted Rifles No 3 Company. He was a crack shot and achieved his marksman's badge. Dinah joined up as a trooper but as he had experience as a blacksmith he received extra pay as a farrier.
His regiment, the Rough Riders, was camped for a period at Potter's Paddock in Auckland. He won two events there at a military gymkhana - tent pegging and the 'Lloyd Lindsay' competition.
When Dinah's unit reached South Africa, they were to go to the relief of Mafeking but by the time they landed the town had been set free. For twelve months their regiment was engaged in escorting convoys and occasionally had to run the gauntlet of attacks by the Boers, in which he had some narrow escapes.
He recalled a mate of his, Herbert Robinson of Putaruru, being shot through the shoulder, the bullet penetrating the bandolier and smashing the brass cartridges.
He remembered seeing Sergeant Harding of Wellington win the V.C. by going to the assistance of a wounded trooper, placing him on his own horse and running out of the zone of fire clinging to the horse's stirrup.
Dinah returned to New Zealand at the end of twelve months, but re-enlisted in the 9th contingent as Farrier Sergeant 7239. However, when they reached Durban the war was almost over, peace being signed a fortnight later. Apart from a bout of enteric fever, Dinah came through the war unscathed.

The gardens around the home were highly cultivated with flowers and ornamental shrubs. There was a flower strewn drive from the homestead to the stables and everywhere there were violets and other flowers. An orchard, nut trees and exotics were all planted and in 1880-81 a very ornate conservatory was built. (This can still be seen on the corner of Victoria Road and King Street.)

He then adjourned the court as a mark of respect to her memory. For three days nearly all the shops in Cambridge were partially closed and flags flew at half mast.
Waikato Times 10 March 1883 ? "It is with great regret that we have to chronicle the death of Mrs John Wilson of Cambridge who expired on Thursday morning, after an illness of some two or three months. Ill-health first overtook Mrs Wilson about three months ago in the form of fits of ague, but it was soon seen that these were but premonitory symptoms of a general breakup of the system. Dr Waddington who was in constant attendance, advised a radical change of climate, and Major Wilson went with the deceased lady on a tour through the South Island, accompanied by her medical adviser. It became apparent that the heart was seriously affected, and dropsy subsequently supervening death rapidly came to the relief of the sufferer. The deceased lady was universally respected throughout the district. Her exertions in the cause of the Ladies Benevolent Society and the church, of which she was an active member, will be long remembered and appreciated. We are requested to state that the remains will not be taken to the church, but direct to the cemetery."
Waikato Times 13 March 1883 ? "The remains of the late Mrs John Wilson were interred in the Cambridge cemetery on Sunday. The funeral was the largest ever seen in this district. The cortege included more than fifty vehicles, a hundred horsemen and a large number of people on foot, and was significant of the high esteem in which the deceased lady and Major Wilson were held by the whole community. Almost every district in Waikato was represented. The service at the grave was impressively said by the Ven Archdeacon Willis, assisted by the Rev. Mr Pomare, Maori Minister."
Te Ngakau, chief of Kawhia and related to Te Aorere, attended adorned in a head-dress of black huia feathers. There was also a large number of Maori women clothed in mourning and wearing green leaves. Over two hundred Ngatiruanui Maori left Taranaki for Cambridge to hold the customary tangi.
The land, which Te Aorere brought into the marriage was bequeathed in her will to her children.
Major John Wilson then married his children's governess Sophia Gray later in 1883 and they had three more sons.
When John died 24 May 1892 aged 62, the Waikato Times reported, "We regret having to record the death of Major Wilson, of Cambridge, one of our pioneer settlers. In 1863 (sic) he brought a company of the 3rd Waikato regiment up to Pukekura, and after they were disbanded at the conclusion of the war, he turned his attention to the Native Land business, in which he was very successful, but he subsequently unfortunately lost ?28,000 in Patatere lands. No man ever acted with greater fairness to the Natives than Major Wilson. He was integrity itself, and his word was his bond. He passed away about noon on Thursday, an affection of the liver being the cause of his death.
"Major Wilson came to the colony in 1840, landing in Wellington in February of that year. In 1867 he became a Justice of the Peace - a position he held for 22 years, after which he resigned. In 1881 he was elected a Fellow of the Institute, and in 1885 a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Deceased leaves a widow and eight children to mourn their loss. He was a man of strict integrity, a kind and indulgente parent, and one whose decease will be greatly regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, not only in Waikato but throughout New Zealand."

He became a Major and was stationed first at Raglan and then Cambridge.
He married a widow, Mrs Caroline J C Barton, and brought his wife and family to Cambridge in September 1864 as General Galloway "wished to see men getting their families there and he thought the example would have a good effect".
He was told he could put his home where he liked so in September 1864 he put up a whare, fenced, drained and planted trees at considerable expense. After the survey his 'piece' was made a reserve and he was allotted the acre next door - much to his annoyance.
Thomas died about 1883.

Residents OLD GORGE cemetery, Woodville, Manawatu

WOODVILLE, once known as The Junction, is a small town in the southern North Island of New Zealand, 75km north of Masterton and 25km east of Palmerston North. Once a timber milling town in the 'Seventy Mile Bush' which extended along the eastern side of the Tararua and Ruahine Ranges. As farmland was settled and cleared, a number of small dairy factories were established to process the supply of milk for consumption as milk, cheese or other dairy products. As recently as the mid-1980s the dairy factory at the western end of Woodville, on State Highway 2 heading towards the Manawatu Gorge, operated a cheese processing line and a 'factory shop' selling dairy produce direct to the public. A thriving sheep and beef economy at one stage supported a number of local trucking firms and carriers, among them Gunn Transport and Hawkes Bay Farmers Transport, both of which were based at the now-derelict site at the corner of State Highway 2 & Vogel Street and the Wairarapa bypass. These business were only economic in the pre-deregulated transport industry that existed prior to the Rogernomics reforms of the Lange Labour Government elected in 1984. With the lifting of distance restrictions (vehicles over a certain weight were at one stage restricted to travelling only 150km from their geographic base) Woodville's role as a transport hub quickly fell away. In the 2006 census 1,398 people were resident in Woodville. In June 2023 the number was 1,680.

The following description of Woodville was written c1900
Woodville is situated 95 miles from Napier and 105 miles from Wellington on the main line of railway and is 3 miles distant from the Manawatu Gorge. It was formerly a part of the Seventy-mile Bush, but is now a prosperous dairying settlement, with thriving industries established. Woodville is also an important central railway junction as it connects the East and West Coast railroads. The country south of Woodville is flat for some miles, but on all other sides the hills rise close to the town.

An undertaker of Woodville early 1900s was
Ernest Roden Grinlinton

He was 29 years old when he performed the deed for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. On 1 Sep 1918 near Bancourt, the leading waves of the battalion on reaching a crest of high ground, found that a line of enemy machine-gun posts offered a serious obstacle to further advance. The company, however, advanced against these posts under point-blank fire and when about 18m away Grant, closely followed by a comrade, rushed ahead of his platoon, entering the centre post and demoralising the garrison so that the platoon were able to mop up the positions. In the same manner he rushed the post on the left and the remaining posts were quickly occupied and cleared by his company.
Shortly afterwards he was promoted to second lieutenant and traveled to Cambridge in England for officer training in October 1918. He was wounded in November, within days of his return to the front. His service with the NZEF ended with his repatriation to New Zealand in 1919

A son (the second white child born in the district) was to became Sir James Parr K.C.M.G. who later told that often in the early [eighteen] seventies the farmers of Pukerimu rushed their wives and families, in the middle of the night, to a central redoubt at Comrie's farm, and there they stood guard, carbine in hand, all through the night, against possible raids.
Reuben was a member of the St Andrews Anglican vestry in 1871, enrolled with the Cambridge Cavalry Volunteers as a trumpeter in 1872, a member of the Farmers' Club in 1875 and on the committee of the Pukerimu School in 1877. In 1877 he also became a member of the Cambridge & Waikato Reed Band.

James Patterson was charged with shooting at and wounding a cow, the property of one Reuben Short, with a shot gun, on the 30th July last. Mr. E. Shaw appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Gully for the defence. The evidence of Reuben Short, dairyman, of Ohiro, went to show that the defendant, who resided at Vogeltown, had complained of witness`s cows trespassing on his property, and had threatened to shoot them. On the evening of the 30th July he saw one of his cows was suffering pain, and he sent for a neighbour, whom he saw extract 14 pellets of lead out of the animal`s shoulder and neck. At this stage the information was withdrawn at the request of the complainant, who did not desire to jeopardise the defendant`s liberty on a charge of felony.

OLD IDENTITIES - GOLDEN WEDDING
A golden wedding is not an event of frequent occurrence, and therefore of more than passing interest, particularly so when representatives of four generations are present at the gatering. Such an event - a family reunion - took place in the Masonic Hall, Berthampore, last evening, in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Short`s golden wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Short are now residing at Palmerston North, but were for forty-three years residents of Brooklyn. They are still enjoying the best of health, although both are over the age of eighty (Mrs. Short being eighty-three and her husband eighty-one). They are among our earliest pioneers, when our city was in its infancy.
Mrs. Short (nee Mary Ann Southy sic) arrived in Wellington on the 17th March, 1841, in the Lady Nugent, and Mr. Short in the Big London a year later.
Life in the old pioneer days was not all sunshine, and, though they shared the hardships which were the common lot of the sturdy pioneer, the old couple are hale and hearty. Mrs. Short was married in 1855 to Richard Clifton, at the Taita, Lower Hutt, where Mr. Clifton met his death about five years later by the fall of a tree at the time of the big flood at the Hutt. There were two daughters and a son by this marriage - Mrs. G. Key, Tasman-street, Wellington, Mrs. A. Rice, Happy Valley, and Mr. S. Clifton, Waikanae.
In 1862, at Lower Hutt, Mrs. Clifton married Mr. Reuben Short, eldest son of the late Mr. James Short, of Happy Valley. By this marriage there were two daughters and one son (deceased). Mrs. J. Tremain, of Palmerston North, and Mrs. C. Rasmussen, of Brooklyn. Except for a few years on the Ballarat diggings, Mr. Short spent the best part of his life in this city. He was a prominent figure in Wellington`s first Labour Day demonstration, being in charge of a team of bullocks. Earlier still he was a dairy farmer at Ohiro.
Mrs. Short was born in Berkshire, England, and was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. John Southy, of Lower Hutt. Mr. Short`s native place was Wiltshire.
Besides being in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Short`s golden wedding, the reunion was also in celebration of the thirty-ninth anniversary of Mr. G. Key`s wedding with Mr. Short`s eldest daughter. In all, there are sixty-six descendants of Mrs. Short surviving, there being four daughters, one son, twenty-nine grandchildren, and, with the exception of three or four, all were present last evening, the youngest in the gathering being three weeks old.
On behalf of the grandchildren, Mr. T. R. Key, the eldest grandchild, (Thomas Richard Key 1875-1963, then aged 37) presented Mrs. Short with a purse of sovereigns. During the evening musical items were given, and, with dances and games, a very pleasant time was spent.

From the EVENING POST - 24 May 1915
Mr. Isaac Short, an old and respected settler, passed away last week at his residence, Ohiro-road, Brookyn. Deceased was born in Wellington in 1947, his parents having arrived in the Big London in 1842. The family consisted of seven sons and three daughters, of whom there is only one son, Mr Reuben Short, of Palmerston North (the eldest), living, and two daughters, Mrs. Dockery, of Greytown, and Mrs. Wright, of West Oxford, Canterbury. Mr. Short was formerly in the carrying business, but retired about twelve years ago. He was one of the oldest members of the Brooklyn Baptist Church.
He is survived by a widow, three sons, six daughters, and eleven grandchilden.
The funeral took place at Karori on Friday

From the EVENING POST - 17 March 1919
A well-known and respected resident of the Lower Hutt, Mrs Sara Ann Rice, passed away last Wednesday, at her residence in the Hutt. Mrs. Rice, who was twice married, was the daughter of Mrs. Reuben Short, of Palmerston North, and sister of Mrs. George Key, of Tasman-street, Wellington. She is survived by her husband, one son, and four daughters, and numerous grandchildren

From the EVENING POST - 12 July 1922
Another old colonist, Mr. Reuben Short, of Roy-street, Palmerston North, has passed away. Mr Short, who was 94 years of age, arrived in the Dominion in the ship London in 1842. He lived in Wellington, and worked here for many years, being the last man to regularly drive a team of bullocks through the streets. The late Mr. Short had resided in Palmerston North for the last twenty years, and for some thirty eight years had been a member of the Salavation Army. He leaves a widow and three daughters, Mrs. Key, Wellington, Mrs. Rasmussen, Brooklyn, Mrs. Tremain, of Feilding, and one son, Mr. Clifton, of Waikanae (read Mary Ann`s notes re this son)

Rev Charles John ABRAHAM - Bishop of Wellington (1814-1903)

The Right Reverand Charles John Abraham DD (1814?1903) was the inaugural Bishop of Wellington

Born in 1814, the son of the late Captain Abraham, R.N., of Farnborough, Hants, he was educated at Eton and King?s College, Cambridge and was later a Fellow.

He was admitted to the degree of B.A. in 1837, M.A. in 1840, B.D. in 1849, and received the degree of D.D. in 1859. He was ordained deacon in 1838 and priest in the following year. He was Assistant Master at Eton until 1850, when he went out to New Zealand to become Master of the English department of St. John's College, Auckland.[3]

In 1853 he was appointed Archdeacon of Waitemata by George Augustus SELWYN, (1809-1878) Bishop of New Zealand.
The Bishop had for two or three years been offering to members of the Church of England a Church Constitution, whereby they were to govern themselves; and during the two years which followed, while absent in England, he left Archdeacon Abraham to propagate and expound the principles of the Church Constitution.

In 1857 a convention of representative churchmen from all parts of the colony was held in Auckland, which resulted in the framing of the Constitution now in force. In the following year Archdeacon Abraham, who had also been acting as chaplain to the Bishop, was consecrated first Bishop of Wellington by the John SUMNER, Archbishop of Canterbury and Bishops (WILBERFORCE) of Oxford and (LONSDALE) of Lichfield. When the Maori war broke out by reason of the purchase by the Government of the Waitara block, Bishop Abraham presented a protest to the Governor, claiming for the Maori as British subjects the right to be heard in the Supreme Court.

In 1870 he resigned his see, and, returning to England, was made coadjutor bishopto Dr. Selwyn, then Bishop of Lichfield.
This office he held until the death of Bishop Selwyn, in 1878. From 1872 to 1876 he was Prebendary of Bobenhall in Lichfield Cathedral, and in 1875-6 was rector of Tattenhill, Staffordshire. Since 1876 he has been Canon and Precentor of Lichfield Cathedral.

He married in 1850 Caroline Harriet, daughter of Sir Charles Thomas PALMER, Bart., of Wanlip Hall, Leicestershire, and cousin of the wife of Bishop Selwyn. She died in 1877.

Bishop Abraham is the author of "Festival and Lenten Lectures in St. George's Chapel, Windsor," 1848-9 (Parker), and other works.

He died on 4 February 1903. His son Charles ABRAHAM (1857-1945) and grandson Philip Selwyn ABRAHAM (1897-1955) were also bishops.
